Richard STEDMAN (c1705-1764)

and Ann TASKER (?-1747)

Richard Stedman and Ann Tasker may have been my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 24 June 1728 at St. Anne's, Lewes, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Lewes which noted Richard was a carpenter of Cuckfield and Ann a spinster of Barcombe.

Richard Stedman may have been baptised on 12 October 1698 the son of Richard Stedman and Jane Ward, or on 16 May 1701 the son of John Stedman and Elizabeth Sawyer.  Both baptisms took place in Slaugham, Sussex.  A Richard Stedman of Cuckfield left a will in 1764.  I am inclined to think that Richard was the one born in 1701, as father John was also a carpenter.

Ann Tasker may have been baptised on 23 April 1700 or on 26 August 1703 in Balcombe, Sussex, and have been the daughter of George Tasker and Jane Geer or Ann Vincent.  One of the George's may have been a blacksmith.  She was buried on 29 April 1747 in Slaugham and it was noted in the burial register that she was from Cuckfield.

It would appear there were 2 Richards who had children baptised in Slaugham at the same time.  The other Richard Stedman married Ann Simmonds in 1733.  I am assuming the baptisms in 1698 and 1701 relate to the 2 Richards, but which was which?

Richard Stedman and Ann Tasker may have had the following children:

  1. Ann Stedman was baptised on 8 November 1728 in Cuckfield.  Both her parents were named in the baptism register.  She was buried on 10 June 1730 in Slaugham and it was noted that she was the daughter of Richard.

  2. Ann Stedman was baptised on 25 March 1731 in Cuckfield.  Both her parents were named in the baptism register.  Ann was mentioned in her brother's will as the wife of William Marshall a wheelwright of Smallfield in Burstow.

Ann  married William Marshal by licence on 7 February 1758 in Cuckfield.  He was then from Burstow, Surrey.

William and Ann had the following child:

    1. Richard Marshall was mentioned in his uncle Richard Stedman's will.

  3. Richard Stedman was baptised on 18 June 1733 in Cuckfield.  Both his parents were named in the baptism register.  He left a will dated 3 July 1769 and proved by his wife Mary on 30 May 1780 in Lewes.  In his will he left the freehold of a messuage/tenement, farm and lands called Northlands in Cuckfield in his own occupation to his wife for her life, and after her death to his sister Ann for the remainder of her life and then to her son Richard.

William married Mary Burt by licence on 21 April 1768 in Cuckfield.  They were both of Cuckfield.

Might Mary have been baptised on 21 July 1728 in Balcombe the daughter of Walter Burt or on 7 December 1736 in Keymer, the daughter of William Burt and Mary Leny?

  4. John Stedman was baptised on 2 November 1735 in Slaugham.  Only his fatherís name was recorded in the baptism register and he was from Cuckfield.  He was buried in Slaugham on 14 March 1735/6 and it was again noted that his father was from Cuckfield.

  5. John Steadman was baptised on 29 April 1737 in Cuckfield.  Both his parents were named in the burial register.  He was buried on 10 November 1737 in Slaugham.  It was noted in the burial register that his father Richard was from Cuckfield.

  6. Sarah Stedman, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 30 September 1739 in Slaugham.  She married 5 99 William Finch (1740-1821) in 1765.  (They have their own page.)  The baptism register only recorded her father's name and he was from Cuckfield.  William and Sarah named their children:  Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Nanny, William, Martha and Jenny, who were all baptised in Slaugham.

  7. William Stedman was baptised on 3 October 1742 in Cuckfield.  Both his parents were named in the baptism register.  He was buried on 28 October 1744 in Slaugham and it was noted in the burial register that his father Richard was from Cuckfield.
