Richard STEDMAN (1593-?)

and Joan BARTLEY (?-?)

 

Richard Stedman and Joan Bartley married on 14 August 1628 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  Richard may also have married Dorothy before 1637.  Or he may have married Judith Gallop.  A marriage licence was issued to them on 11 February 1636/7 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and it recorded that Richard was a plawmaker and Judith a spinster and they were both of Bolney.  Surety for the licence was provided by Richard himself and William Pearce of Cuckfield.

Richard Stedman was baptised on 10 April 1593 in Bolney, but neither of his parents were named in the baptism register.  A Richard Stedman was buried on 6 October 1668 in Bolney.  He may have been the son John Stedman (1571-?) and Thomsen Ellis.

Joan Bartley may have been baptised on 16 September 1610 in Bolney and was the daughter of Richard Bartley.

 

Richard Stedman and Joan Bartley had 2 known children:

  1. Richard Stedman was baptised on 7 June 1629 in Cuckfield.

    Richard may have married Joan.

    Richard and Joan had the following children:

    1. Mary Stedman was born on 5 November 1657 in Cuckfield.

    2. John Stedman was baptised on 23 June 1661 in Cuckfield.  He may have married Elizabeth Sawyer in 1684.  (They have their own page.)  John married to Elizabeth was a carpenter.

  2. John Stedman was baptised on 7 April 1633 in Cuckfield.

    John may have married Beatrice.

    John and Beatrice may have had the following children:

    1. Sarah Stedman was baptised on 15 March 1660/1 in Cuckfield and buried there on 25 October 1661.

    2. John Stedman was baptised on 6 February 1664/5 in Cuckfield.

 

Richard Stedman and Dorothy or Judith Gallop had 1 known daughter:

  1. Elizabeth Stedman was baptised on 11 May 1637 in Bolney.  The baptism register recorded that she was the daughter of Richard and Dorothy.  She was buried on 24 May 1640 in Bolney and the burial register noted that she was the daughter of Richard.
