My Stedman Ancestors
I join the Stedman tree with a 5x Great Grandmother
Sarah Stedman who
was born 1738 in Slaugham, Sussex and married
William Finch there in
1765.
In January 2009 I did a review of my Stedman ancestors and came to the
conclusion that I'd gone wrong. I'm fairly confident that Sarah
Stedman baptised in 1739 in Slaugham was my ancestor. But who
were her parents?
The Slaugham baptism register said she was the daughter of Richard
Stedman and originally I had not realised the significance of the extra
words in the register, that her father was of Cuckfield. I had previously
assumed Sarah was the daughter of Richard Stedman and
Ann Simmonds who had married in Ardingly in 1733. That Richard
was then of Slaugham and I had again assumed that all the children baptised to
Richard in Slaugham after 1733 were their children. The mother's was only
mentioned against a 1734 baptism.
But, another Richard Stedman had married Ann Tasker
in 1728 in Lewes and he was said to be of Cuckfield. I now believe that
this couple also had children baptised in Slaugham at the same time as the other
Richard and Ann. The only distinguishing difference in the baptism
register between the two Richards was that one was said to have been from Cuckfield.
I now think that Richard Stedman and Ann Tasker
were the parents of Sarah Stedman, and that he left the will in
1764, which I haven't yet read. I also think Ann was buried in Slaugham in
1747, when she was said to be of Cuckfield. Another Richard
Stedman of Cuckfield left a will in 1780 and from extracts found at
A2A, it would seem he was the son of Richard and Ann (nee Tasker). This
younger Richard mentioned an elder sister in his will, but as I haven't yet read
his will in full, I don't know if he mentioned his possibly younger sister,
Sarah.
The next problem is when was Richard born? The Slaugham baptism register
records that a Richard Stedman was baptised there in 1698 to
Richard Stedman and Jane, and another in 1701
to John Stedman and Elizabeth. Could
these be the two Richards?
