William STANDING (1822-1893)
and Ann REEVES (1824-?)

William Standing and Ann Smart married by
banns on 22 July 1849 in Old Shoreham, Sussex. He was then a bachelor
and labourer she a widow. Their fathers were named as John
Standing and John Reeves who were both labourers.
The witnesses to their marriage were John Reeves and
Jane Standing. Previously as Ann Reeves she
had married
Francis Smart by banns on 25 December 1841 in Old Shoreham.
He was then a 20 year old bachelor and labourer and she was a 19 year old
spinster and servant from Southwick. Their fathers were named as
Samuel Smart and John Reeves who were both
labourers. The witnesses to their marriage were John Smart
and Mary Ann Smart. (They were not my direct ancestors, but William and Ann were
the 3x Great Grandparents of my cousin Julie Willard.)
William Standing was baptised on 7 April 1822 in Patching,
Sussex. He was the son of John Standen (c1786-1846)
and Sarah Farrell (c1797-?). The 1841 census recorded
that he was 15 years old and living with his parents at Dog Kennels in
Patching. William died aged 72 years and was buried on 29 December
1893 in Old Shoreham.
Ann Reeves was baptised on 24 March 1824 in Southwick, Sussex.
She was the daughter of John Reeves and Christina
Saunders (1797-?).
Francis Smart was baptised on 30 September 1821 in Old
Shoreham. He was the son of
Samuel Smart (1788-1825)
and Catherine Cox (c1789-1856). Francis
died aged 25 years and was buried on 22 March 1846 in Old Shoreham.
Francis/Frank and
Ann had the following children:

Samuel John Smart was baptised on 23 July 1843 in
Old Shoreham. He was 7 years old in 1851 and his name was recorded
in the census as Samuel Standing.

Caroline Smart was born in the first quarter 1846 in Old
Shoreham. She was 5 years old in 1851 and the census recorded her
name as Caroline Standing.
Caroline married John William Smart by banns on 26
December 1868 in Old Shoreham. He was then a bachelor and
shipwright and she a spinster. Their fathers were named as
John Smart a gardener and Frank Smart a
labourer. The witnesses to their marriage were Lydia Smart and Frederick Chandler.
John William was born about 1845 in New Shoreham. He
died aged 43 years and was buried on 30 October 1888 in Old
Shoreham. The burial register noted that he was from New Shoreham.
When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and their 4 children were
living at the Kings Head Inn in the High Street, New Shoreham.
John was then a 37 year old publican and Caroline was 35. They
both gave their places of birth as Shoreham. Also with them was
Caroline's half siblings, Christiana and Frank.
John and Caroline had the following children:

Alice M. Smart was born about 1870 in
Shoreham. She was an 11 year old scholar in 1881.

Alfred John Norton Smart was baptised on 4 May 1873 in
Old Shoreham. He was an 8 year old scholar in 1881.

Frank Herbert Smart was baptised on 5 March 1876 in Old
Shoreham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
shipwright from New Shoreham. In 1881 he was a 5 year old scholar.

Stanley Samuel Smart was baptised on 12 September 1880
in Old Shoreham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
shipwright from New Shoreham.
When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 3 children were living in
Old Shoreham. William was a 29 year old farm labourer and Ann was 28.
In 1861 the couple and 5 children were living in Old Shoreham village.
William was a 39 year old agricultural labourer and Ann was 37.
The 1871 census records that the couple and 5 children were living in Old
Shoreham, Sussex. William was then a 49 year old agricultural labourer
and Ann was 47.
When the 1901 census was recorded, Ann was a 79 year old widow living in The
Street, Old Shoreham. With her on census night was her daughter
Christian. Her daughter Eliza was living next door, and her son Alfred
and his family was living the other side of Eliza.

Reeves had 8 known children:

Eliza Jane Standing was baptised on 30
June 1851 in
Old Shoreham. The baptism register noted that her father was a
gardener. When the 1851 census was recorded she was 11 days
old. She was a 10 year old scholar in 1861.
Eliza Jane married Isaac Norton by banns on 10 December
1871 in Old Shoreham. He was then a bachelor and fisherman and she
a spinster. Their fathers were named as John Norton
and William Standing who were both labourers. The
witnesses to their marriage were Frank Smart and
Eliza Walls.
Isaac was born about 1838 in Donnington, Sussex.
At the time of the 1901 census, 63 year old Isaac and 50 year old Eliza
were living in The Street, Old Shoreham. The family of her brother
Alfred were one side of them and her widowed mother and sister the
other.

Mary Ann Standing was baptised on 20 June 1852 in
Old Shoreham. The baptism register noted that her father was a
labourer. She was an 8 year old scholar in 1861. Mary Ann
died age 17 years and was buried on 25 July 1869 in Old Shoreham.

Alfred Standing was baptised on 27 August 1854 in Old Shoreham.
In 1861 he was a 6 year old scholar. He was a 16 year old
agricultural labourer in 1871 and living at home.
Alfred married Agnes Clevett in the first quarter of 1888
in the East Preston registration district.
Agnes was baptised on 3 May 1863 in Findon, Sussex, and was the daughter
of Henry Clevatt and Ann Standen.
When the 1901 census was recorded the couple and their 3 children were
living in The Street, Old Shoreham. Alfred was a 45 year old
general labourer and Agnes was 38. He gave his place of birth as
Shoreham and she as Findon. Alfred's elder sister was living next
door.
Alfred and Agnes had the following children:

Ethel Agnes Standing was baptised on 9 December 1888 in
Old Shoreham. The baptism register noted that her father was a
game keeper. In 1901 she was 12 years old.

Alfred Henry Standing was baptised on 19 October 1890
in Old Shoreham. He was 10 years old in 1901.

Winifred Standing was baptised on 4 June 1892 in Old
Shoreham. At the time of the 1901 census she was 9 years old.

William Standing was born about 1857 in Old Shoreham.
In 1861 he was 4 years old. He was 14 years old in 1871.
William married Sarah Anne Nye by banns on 4 November
1883 in Old Shoreham. He was a bachelor and coachman and she a
spinster from Southwick. Their fathers were named as
William Standing and William Nye who were both
labourers. The witnesses to their marriage were William
Huffer and Lucy Louisa Nye.
Sarah Anne was baptised on 6 November 1853 in Southwick, Sussex and was
the daughter of William Nye and Prudence Morris.
William and Sarah Ann had the following child:

George William Standing was baptised on 6 July 1884 in
Old Shoreham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
coachman.

Isabel Standing was born about 1859 in Old Shoreham.
When the 1861 census was recorded she was 2 years old.
Isabel married William Knight by banns on 29 December
1883 in Old Shoreham. He was a bachelor and labourer from Lancing
and she was a spinster. Their fathers were named as
William Knight and William Standing who were
both labourers. The witnesses to their marriage were
Alfred Standing and Lydia Standing.

Lydia Standing
was baptised on 1 December 1861 in Old Shoreham. She
married
Albert Cooper in 1888. (They have their own page.)

Christiana Standing was baptised on 6 December 1863 in Old Shoreham.
She was a 7 year old scholar in 1871. At the time of the 1881
census she was a 17 year old servant and living with the family of her
elder half sister. In 1901 she was an unmarried 37 year old living
with her mother.

Frank Standen was baptised on 4 November 1866 in Old Shoreham.
He was a 4 year old scholar in 1871. In 1881 he was a 14 year old
school boy and living with his elder half sister. Frank died aged 32 years and
was buried on 18 November 1897 in Old Shoreham. The burial
register noted that he was from New Shoreham.
