Thomas STANDING (1797-1881)

and Charlotte WILLARD (1799-1880)

 

Thomas Standing and Charlotte Willard married by banns on 30 September 1820 in Pulborough, Sussex.  Thomas was a bachelor and Charlotte a spinster.  The witnesses were James Standing and James Overington.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Charlotte was the sister of my 3x great grandfather.)

Thomas Standen was baptised on 16 July 1797 in Fittleworth, Sussex.  He was the son of John Standen and Jane Elliott.  Thomas died aged 83 years in the first quarter of 1881 in the Thakeham registration district.

Charlotte Willard was baptised on 12 May 1799 in Pulborough.  She was the daughter of John Willard (1773-1846) and Jane Godden (1774-1850).  Charlotte died aged 79 years in the first quarter of 1880 in the Thakeham registration district.

When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Barn House in Pulborough, and Thomas was an agricultural labourer.  At that time their next door neighbours were the family of William Lidbetter and his wife Charlotte Mills.  The family were still living in Pulborough in 1851 and their 5 year old granddaughter Harriett Standen was staying with them on census night.  In 1861 the couple and their 2 youngest children were living in Barn House Lane, Pulborough.  The couple and their youngest daughter were living in Lower Street, Pulborough in 1871.

 

Thomas Standing and Charlotte Willard had 11 known children:

  1. George Standen was baptised on 16 February 1823 in Pulborough.  His father was described as a labourer in the baptism register.

    George married Harriet Pescott on 1 November 1845 in Amberley, Sussex.

    Harriet was baptised on 19 February 1826 in Rackham, Sussex and was the daughter of John Peskett and Elizabeth Russell.

    When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and their son were living in Washington, Sussex and George was an agricultural labourer.  By 1861 the family had moved to 3 Seymour Street in Portsea, Hampshire and George was a shepherd.  In 1871 they were living in London Road, Portsea and George was a carter.  The 1881 census records that the couple and their 2 youngest daughters were living at Kingston Cross Travellers Joy in Portsea and George was a labourer and beer retailer.

    George and Harriet had the following known children:

    1. Harriett Standen was baptised on 15 March 1846 in Amberley.  She was a living with her paternal grandparents when the 1851 census was recorded.  In 1861 she was 15 years old and living with her parents.

    2. George Standen was baptised on 3 June 1849 in Pulborough, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was 2 years old in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 12 year old scholar.

    3. Lucy Standen was born about 1852 in Washington.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1861.

    4. William Standen was born about 1854 in Portsea.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1861.  In 1871 he was a 15 year old carder and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

    5. Ann Standen was born about 1857 in Portsea.  In 1861 she was a 4 year old scholar.  She was 13 years old in 1871.

    6. Mary J. Standen was born about 1859 in Portsea.  She was a 2 year old scholar in 1861.

    7. Susan Standen was born about 1860 in Portsea.  In 1871 she was an 11 year old scholar.

    8. Esther Standen was born about 1862 in Portsea.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1871.

    9. Thomas Standen was born about 1865 in Portsea.  He was 6 years old in 1871.

    10. Ellen Standen was born about 1866 in Portsea.  She was 5 years old in 1871.  In 1881 she was 15 years old.

    11. Eliza or Alice Standen was born in 1871 in Portsea.  When the 1871 census was recorded she was 3 months old.  In 1881 she was 10 years old.

  2. Frances Standen was baptised on 3 April 1825 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.

    Frances married Walter Burchel by banns on 5 August 1848 in Pulborough.  Walter was a 21 year old bachelor and labourer.  Frances was a 22 year old spinster.  Their father's were named as William Burchel a carpenter and Thomas Standen a labourer.  The witnesses were Charles Standen and Harriet Standen.

    When the 1881 census was recorded, 50 year old, married Francis Burchell, a labourer's wife, was living at 45 Toronto Terrace in Brighton, Sussex, along with her unmarried 34 year old daughter, Emma Standing and 3 year old grandson William Burchell.

  3. Thomas Standen was baptised on 17 July 1825 in Pulborough, at which time his father was a labourer.

  4. Charles Standen was baptised on 24 June 1827 in Pulborough, at which time his father was a labourer.  In 1841 he was 14 years old and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

  5. Helen Standen was baptised on 7 February 1830 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  The 1841 census records that she was 12 year old Ellen Standon.

  6. Mary Standen was baptised on 29 July 1832 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  She was 9 years old in 1841.

  7. James Standen was baptised on 16 November 1834 in Pulborough, at which time his father was a labourer.  He probably died as an infant and was buried on 9 January 1835 in Pulborough.

  8. Ann Standen was baptised on 7 February 1836 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  She was 6 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was 15 years old and the eldest of her siblings living at home.

  9. Harriet Standen was baptised on 11 November 1838 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  In 1841 she was 3 years old.  She was a 13 year old scholar in 1851. 

    Harriet married John Barnes on 8 March 1859 in Coldwaltham, Sussex.  John was then a 35 year old widower and Harriet a 22 year old spinster.

    John was baptised on 9 May 1824 in Coldwaltham and was the son of William Barnes and Sarah Henley.  John had first married Catherine Tylor in October 1848.

  10. William Standen was baptised on 30 May 1841 in Pulborough, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was a month old when the 1841 census was recorded.  In 1851 he was 10 years old.  The 1861 census records that he was a 19 year old shoemaker.

    William married Eliza Hawkins on 19 May 1865 in Stopham, Sussex.

    Eliza was baptised on 12 November 1843 in Stopham and was the daughter of William Hawkins and Jane Collins.

Emma Standen was baptised on 19 May 1844 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  She was 7 years old at the time of the 1851 census.  In 1861 she was 16 years old.  The 1871 census records that she was an unmarried 27 year old needlewoman living with her parents in Pulborough.  When the 1881 census was recorded she may have been living with her elder sister Frances Burchell, in Brighton.  However, the 1881 census records that Emma was the daughter of Frances.
