John SNASHALL (1696-1744)

and Sarah JENNER (c1700-?)

John Snashall and Sarah Jenner married on 28 May 1723 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)  Another John Snashall married Elizabeth Barden in 1720 and they were my 6x Great Grandparents.

John Snashall was most probably baptised on 1 May 1696 in Slaugham, Sussex, the son of John Snashall and Ann Garston who married in Slaugham on 7 February 1687/8.  John senior was probably baptised on 3 March 1663/4 in Slaugham the son of Thomas Snashall.  The 1734 Electoral Roll records a John Snashall of Slaugham.  John (junior) was probably buried on 24 April 1744 in Slaugham.

Sarah Jenner's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

John Snashall and Sarah Jenner had 4 known children:

  1. Sarah Snashall was baptised on 20 May 1728 in Slaugham.  She may have married James Juniper by licence on 1 April 1749 at All Saints in Lewes, Sussex.  She was then of Cuckfield and he of the parish of All Saints.

  2. John Snashall was baptised on 3 January 1731 in Slaugham.

John may have married Mary Izard on 4 September 1753 in Uckfield.

John and Mary had 8 known children:

    1. William Snashall was baptised on 20 July 1754 in Slaugham.

William may have married Susan Peryn by licence on 12 March 1777 in Cuckfield.  He was then of Slaugham and she of Cuckfield.

    2. John Snashall was baptised on 22 January 1756 in Slaugham.  He may have died aged 70 years and have been buried on 26 May 1827 in Slaugham.

John may have married Phoebe Stoner by licence on 7 January 1779 in Slaugham, Sussex.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Nuthurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were Robert Stoner and Charles Colven.  (There was another John Snashall baptised in Henfield in 1755.)

Phoebe was baptised on 14 May 1758 in Nuthurst, Sussex and was the daughter of Robert Stoner and Mary.

    3. Thomas Snashall was baptised on 7 February 1758 in Slaugham.

    4. Robert Snashall was baptised on 20 July 1760 in Slaugham.

    5. Richard Snashall was baptised on 28 December 1761 in Slaugham

    6. James Snashall was baptised on 10 July 1763 in Slaugham.

James married Poll or Molly Shepard by banns on 5 April 1785 in Slaugham.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Slaugham.

    7. Sarah Snashall was baptised on 31 January 1768 in Slaugham.

    8. Reuben Snashall was baptised on 29 March 1772 in Slaugham.

Reuben probably married Sarah Huggett by banns on 14 June 1805 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  They were both then of East Grinstead.

On 13 January 1809 a removal order was issued to Reuben Snashall, his wife Sarah and their 2 sons.

Reuben and Sarah had the following children:

      1. John Snashall was born about 1805.  He was 4 years old when his parents were issued a removal order.

      2. James Snashall was born about 1807.  He was 2 years old when his parents were issued a removal order.

  3. William Snashall was baptised on 10 December 1736 in Slaugham.

William may have married Mary Perren by banns on 31 December 1763 in Cuckfield, at which time he was a bachelor and she a spinster who were both of Cuckfield.

  4. Jane Snashall was baptised on 19 August 1739 in Slaugham.

Jane may have married John Lewry by banns on 1 November 1757 in Cuckfield, at which time they were both of Cuckfield.

    1. William Lewry was baptised on 12 May 1765 in Bolney.

William married Elizabeth Holman by banns on 21 June 1788 in Ditchling, Sussex.  The witnesses to the marriage were Sarah Norman and John Cox

William and Elizabeth may have been the parents of:

      1. Thomas Lewry was born about 1788 in Bolney, according to the 1851 census, but no possible baptism has been found for him in the Bolney parish registers.

Thomas married Mary Mansbridge by banns on 8 August 1809 in Bolney, Sussex.  They were both of Bolney and both made their marks.  The witnesses were James Mansbridge (marked) and Elizabeth Lewry (signed).

Mary was baptised on 17 April 1790 in Cowfold and was the daughter of James Mansbridge (1759-1830) and Mary Finch (1768-1837).

      2. Henry Lewry was baptised on 30 May 1813 in Bolney.  The baptism register noted that his father was a higler from Cuckfield.
