John SNASHALL (1690-1740)

and Elizabeth BARDEN (c1700-1764)

John Snashall and Elizabeth Barden were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may also have been my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their other possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 29 May 1720 at the parish church of St. Giles parish church Shermanbury, Sussex.  At the time they were both of Shermanbury.

John Snashall was probably baptised on 23 March 1689/90 in West Grinstead, Sussex, the son of John Snashall (c1660-1732) and Elizabeth.  West Grinstead and Shermanbury parishes adjoin one another.  John died in Henfield, Sussex and was buried in Shermanbury on 9 December 1740.  (A John Snashall of New Shoreham married Sarah Comber a spinster of Lewes by licence dated 16 October 1696, although I have not found any children for them.  A John Snashall was baptised in Slaugham in 1696 and he probably married Sarah Jenner in 1723.)

Elizabeth Barden's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 4 January 1764 in Shermanbury and the burial register records that she was Elizabeth Snashall, widow.  Might she have been baptised on 1 March 1694/5 the daughter of John Barden and Mary Sayers?  Or was she born on 18 June and baptised on 1 July 1698 the daughter of Thomas Barden and Timothy Gillum?  Both baptisms took place in Cuckfield, Sussex and both girls were the Granddaughters of Thomas Barden and Elizabeth Tredcraft.

John Snashall and Elizabeth Barden had 4 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Snashall was baptised on 5 December 1721 in Shermanbury and buried there on 16 April 1723.

  2. Sarah Snashall was baptised on 17 October 1723 in Shermanbury.

  3. John Snashall was baptised on 29 May 1725 in Shermanbury.  He may have been buried on 27 April 1729 in Shermanbury.  Unfortunately the burial register only records the name and no further identifying details.

  4. Thomas Snashall, my 5x Great Grandfather and possible 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 14 July 1727 in Shermanbury.  He married Ann Norman in 1745.  (They have their own page.)
