Robert SMITH (1710-1775)

and Elizabeth SWIFT (1710-1766)

and Susanna (?-1790)

Robert Smith and Elizabeth Swift were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 14 June 1733 at the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wadhurst, Sussex.  After Elizabeth's death Robert married Susannah West a widow, by banns on 2 February 1767 in Wadhurst.  They were both of Wadhurst.  Robert made his X mark whilst Susannah signed her name.  The witnesses were ? Duplock and George Chapman, who both signed their names.  The banns were published on 18 and 25 January and 1 February 1767 in Wadhurst.

Robert Smith was baptised on 6 March 1709/10 in Wadhurst.  He was the son of Robert Smith (c1680-?) and Mary Markwick (1675-?).  Robert was a labourer and a farmer.  He was buried on 7 December 1775 in Wadhurst.  However, there was also a Robert Smith baptised on 8 Febuary 1707 in Wadhurst, the son of John Smith and Ann Lambkin, and for the moment I can't be certain our Robert was the one born in 1710.  Our Robert named a daughter Mary but not one named Ann.

Elizabeth Swift was baptised on 2 November 1710 in Wadhurst.  She was the daughter of John Swift (1669-1730) and Elizabeth Kitchenham (1683-1749).  She was buried on 10 May 1766 in Wadhurst.  She was mentioned in her motherís will of 1749, as the eldest daughter and wife of Robert Smith.

Susanna's date and place of birth/baptism and previous marriage are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 24 January 1790 in Wadhurst and in the burial register she was described as the widow of Robert Smith a farmer.
