Thomas SMART (c1761-1823)

and Elizabeth OLDER (1753-1817)

Thomas Smart and Elizabeth Bennett married by banns on 11 May 1784 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was he was then a bachelor and she a widow and they were both of Horsham.  The witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth Smart and Richard Howes.  Previously as Elizabeth Older she may have married Henry Bennett by banns on 21 June 1774 in Warnham, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Robert Clark and William Steere.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Smart's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He died aged 62 years and was buried on 19 March 1823 in Horsham, therefore, he was born about 1760/1.

Elizabeth was probably baptised as Betty Older on 13 May 1753 in Billingshurst, Sussex, the daughter of Solomon Older (1716-?)and Elizabeth Elliott.  She died aged 64 years and was buried on 16 November 1817 in Horsham (i.e. born about 1753).  The burial register records that Elizabeth was the wife of Thomas Smart.

Henry Bennett was most probably baptised on 13 December 1746 in Warnham, the son of Henry Bennett and Ann Charman.  He may have been buried on 2 February 1781 in Warnham.

Thomas Smart and Elizabeth Older had 7 known children:

  1. Thomas Smart was baptised on 17 October 1784 in Horsham.  He married Harriet Older in 1819.  (They have their own page.)

  2. William Smart was baptised on 22 January 1786 in Horsham.  He married Charlotte Comber in 1815.  (They have their own page.)

  3. John Smart was baptised on 2 September 1787 in Horsham.

  4. Samuel Smart was baptised on 3 January 1790 in Horsham.  The baptism register recorded his mother's name as Betty.  He may have been buried on 4 July 1794 in Horsham.  The burial register recorded that Samuel Smart was a boy.

  5. Mary Ann Smart was baptised on 11 September 1793 in Horsham.

Mary Ann married John Hammond by licence on 23 February 1815 in South Malling, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 22 May 1815 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which noted that he was a bachelor from Godalming, Surrey and she was a spinster of South Malling.  They were both aged 21 years and upwards.  Surety for the licence was provided by John himself and Thomas Smart a farmer of South Malling.

John and Mary Ann had the following children:

    1. George Hammond was baptised on 28 May 1820 in Horsham.  The baptism register noted that his father was a butcher.

    2. Sarah Smart Hammond died aged 3 years and 8 months and was buried on 17 February 1826 in Horsham.

  6. Frances Smart was baptised on 5 July 1795 in Horsham.  The baptism register recorded her mother's name as Betty.

  7. George Smart was baptised on 4 November 1798 in Horsham.  The baptism register recorded his mother's name as Betty.  He died aged 22 years and was buried on 29 July 1821 in Horsham.

Might the following be related to the above:

John Smart died aged 74 years and was buried on 17 September 1841 in Horsham, therefore, born about 1767.

Charlotte Smart died aged 76 years and was buried on 14 April 1842 in Horsham, therefore, born about 1766.
