James SLATER (1768-1847)

and Sarah BROOKS (1771-1854)

James Slater and Sarah Brookes married on 4 September 1794 in Pulborough, Sussex.  James was a bachelor and Sarah a spinster.  They were both of Pulborough and both made their X marks.  The witnesses were Richard Brooks and Nicholas Warner.  (Nicholas was a witness to many marriages in Pulborough.)  (James and Sarah were not my direct ancestors.)

James Slater may have been baptised on 10 April 1768 in Pulborough and have been the son of Edward Slater and Sarah Wares.  He may have died aged 78 years and have been buried on 11 September 1847.  However, there was another James Slater who died aged 88 years and was buried on 6 January 1849 in Pulborough, he was, therefore, born about 1761.  The elder James Slater may have first married Jane Standen by banns on 14 October 1783 in Wisborough Green, Sussex, at which time he was of Pulborough and she of Wisborough Green.  Jane was buried on 29 May 1790 in Pulborough.  Then as a widower he may have married Mary Green, a widow, by banns on 22 April 1796 in Pulborough.

Sarah Brooks may have been baptised on 29 September 1771 in Billingshurst, and have been the daughter of Henry Brooks (1746-?) and Sarah Mills (1747-?).  She died aged 81 years and was buried on 12 January 1854 in Pulborough, therefore, she was born about 1773.  There was a Sarah Brooks baptised in 1775 in Pulborough, who I believe married Allen Older.

When the 1841 census was recorded James and Sarah were both said to be 60 years old.  He was then a farmer and they were living at North Heath in Pulborough, next door to their son James and his family.  Also with the couple in 1841 were 40 year old Samuel Slater, 40 year old Ester Slater, 18 year old Ann Strudwick, 9 year old Charlotte Strudwick and 55 year old William Brooks.

James Slater and Sarah Brooks had 7 known children:

  1. James Slater was baptised on 29 December 1796 in Pulborough.  James married Elizabeth Burchill by banns on 27 October 1823 in Pulborough.  The witnesses to the marriage were Samuel Slater and Charlotte Slater.

  2. Mary Slater was baptised on 21 September 1800 in Pulborough.  She died aged 16 years and was buried on 8 March 1816 in Pulborough.

  3. Samuel Slater may have been born about 1802 in Pulborough.  The 1841 census records his age as 40 years, whilst the 1851 says he was 47.

  4. Charlotte Slater was baptised on 27 May 1804 in Pulborough and may have died as an infant.

  5. Luke Slater was baptised on 29 March 1807 in Pulborough.  He married Mary Rapley on 16 May 1829 in Pulborough.  The couple had 1 known son:

    1. Harvey Slater was baptised on 8 July 1838 in Pulborough.

  6. Charlotte Slater was baptised on 9 April 1811 in Pulborough.

Charlotte married James Streeter on 31 December 1831 in Pulborough.  The witnesses to the marriage were James Slater and Avice Ayling.

James was baptised on 28 April 1811 in Pulborough and was the son of Thomas Streeter and Martha Briggs.

James and Charlotte had 1 known son:

    1. Samuel Streeter was baptised on 12 August 1832 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.  When the 1841 census was recorded, 9 year old Samuel was living in the Wisborough Green Workhouse, without his parents.

  7. Harvey Slater was baptised on 12 September 1813 in Pulborough.  He died age 20 years and was buried on 2 February 1833 in Pulborough.

Richard Brooks was the witness to the marriage of James Slater and Sarah Brooks, and was probably the brother of the Sarah born in 1775, therefore, was Sarah Slater, nee Brookes, the one baptised in Pulborough in 1775?  But, in 1841 Richard was living with the family of Frances Older who was the daughter of the Sarah Brooks who married Allen Older

Just to add to the confusion an H. Slater was a witness to the marriage of Allen Older and Sarah Brookes - who was H.?

I havenít yet checked the 1851 census for Sarah Slater aged about 78 - was she born in Pulborough or Billingshurst?
