Hugh Simonds and Susan Eliott married on 30 August 1659 at the parish church of St. Peter's in Ardingly, Sussex.  As Hugh Simons he had previously married Ann Newman on 5 May 1655 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was then said to be a hammerman from Ardingly, whilst she was a servant from Balcombe.

Hew Simmons was baptised on 27 September 1626 in Ardingly.  He was the son of 5 245 John Simmons (1599-1635) and 5 245 Mary Millam (1599-?).  He was buried on 15 May 1688 in Ardingly.  The burial register records that he was the husband of Susanna Symonds.  He married twice.  Firstly to Ann Newman on 5 May 1655 in Horsham, Sussex.

Ann Newman’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have died in 1656, but the Ardingly burial register for 1656 is missing.  Note, the surname Newman is often recorded as Newnham.

Susan Elliotte was baptised on 14 October 1638 in Ardingly.  She was the daughter of 5 247 John Elliotte and 5 247 Anne Appes (1614-?).  She was buried on 17 May 1722 in Ardingly.  The burial register records that Suzannah Symons was a poor widow. 

Hugh Symmons and Ann Newman had 1 known child:

1. Mary Simmons was baptised on 9 March 1655/6 in Ardingly.  She may have married William Lulham on 2 June 1685 in Ardingly.

Hugh Symmons and Susan Elliotte had 8 known children:

1. John Simons was born on 25 June 1660 in Ardingly.

2. Hugh Symonds was baptised on 21 December 1662 in Ardingly.  He died aged 79 years and was buried on 19 February 1739/40 in Ardingly.

   Hugh married Susanna sometime before or about 1688/9.  No possible marriage for them has been found in the Sussex or Surrey marriage indexes.

   Susanna may have died aged died aged 70 years and have been buried on 13 November 1737 in Ardingly, but the burial register records that it was Anne Simons who was buried.

   Hugh and Susanna had 9 known children: 

   1. Anne Symonds was baptised on 27 April 1689 in Ardingly.

      As Ann Symonds she married James Standen on 1 May 1709 in Ardingly.

   2. Hugh Symonds was baptised on 28 February 1690/1 in Ardingly and buried there on 14 March 1690/1.

   3. Susanna Symonds was baptised on 29 January 1691/2 in Ardingly.  Did she marry William Woolven on 14 April 1724 in Bolney, Sussex

   4. Jane Symonds was baptised on 27 December 1694 in Ardingly.

   5. Hugh Symonds was born on 10 January 1696/7 and baptised on 28 February 1696/7 in Ardingly.

      As Hugh Simmonds he may have married Ann Marchant on 22 April 1725 in Balcombe, Sussex, and/or Elizabeth Randal on 27 December 1727 in Plumpton, Sussex.  However, he did have 2 cousins named Hugh:  Hugh Symonds baptised in July 1707 and Hugh Simmonds baptised in October 1707.

   6. William Symonds was born on 20 May 1700 and baptised on 15 June 1700 in Ardingly.

      As William Simonds did he marry Esther Norman on 21 April 1726 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex?  William was then of Balcombe and Esther of Horsted Keynes.  However, he did have a cousin, William Symonds born in 1705, and there may have been other Williams of similar age.

   7. John Symonds was born on 2 January 1702/3 and baptised on 25 March 1703 in Ardingly.

      John or his cousin, John Simons, born in 1710, may have married Mary Sherlock on 29 February 1735/6 in Ardingly.  Mary died aged 27 years and was buried on 1 June 1736 in Ardingly.

   8. James Symonds was born on 14 February 1705/6 and baptised on 16 February 1705/6 in Ardingly.

      As James Symans did he marry Mary Field on 15 August 1728 in Wivelsfield, Sussex?

   9. Joseph Simons was baptised on 14 August 1709 in Ardingly.

      As Joseph Symons he may have married Sarah Beard on 2 September 1731 in Ardingly.  Joseph was then said to be of Worth and Sarah of Ardingly.

3. Elizabeth Symonds was baptised on 19 February 1664/5 in Ardingly.

   Elizabeth married John Rosar on 29 October 1685 in Ardingly.

   John was born in about 1664 in Lindfield and was the son of John Roser.  He was buried on 24 March 1711/2 in Lindfield.

   John and Elizabeth had 7 known children: 

   1. Elizabeth Roser was baptised on 17 October 1686 in Lindfield.  She married John Cave on 11 May 1708 in Lindfield.

   2. John Roser was baptised on 22 January 1688 in Lindfield.  He married Mary sometime before or about 1712.  The couple had 7 known children.

   3. Hugh Roser was baptised on 28 February 1692 in Lindfield.

   4. Jane Roser was baptised on 24 June 1694 in Lindfield.

   5. Mary Roser was baptised on 28 June 1696 in Lindfield.

   6. Thomas Roser was baptised on 26 June 1698 in Linfield.

   7. Ellenor Roser was baptised on 9 October 1700 in Lindfield.  She was buried on 27 January 1777.  As Eleanor Roser she married John Mitchell of Henfield on 24 November 1723 in Woodmancote, Sussex.

4. Thomas Symmonds married 5 223 Sarah Burleigh (c1672-1754) in 1699.  (They have their own page.)

5. Jane Simonds was baptised on 13 January 1669/1670 in Ardingly.

6. Susanna Symonds was baptised on 26 February 1672/3 in Ardingly.

7. William Symonds was baptised on 16 July 1676 in Ardingly.  He died aged 76 years and was buried on 22 October 1751 in Ardingly.  The burial register recorded his name as William Simons.

   William married Elizaebth Maite on 11 April 1700 in Ardingly.

   Elizabeth died aged 83 years and was buried on 18 June 1759 in Ardingly.  Her name was recorded as Elizabeth Symonds in the burial register.

   William and Elizabeth had 7 known children: 

   1. Elizabeth Symonds was baptised on 20 December 1700 in Ardingly.  She died aged 50 years and was buried on 27 June 1751 in Ardingly.

      As Elizabeth Simons she married Walter West on 28 April 1730 in Ardingly.  They were both then of Ardingly.

      Walter died aged 32 years and was buried on 29 December 1741.

      Walter and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. William West was born on 16 October 1731 and baptised on 24 October 1731 in Ardingly.

      2. Walter West was born on 28 May 1734 and baptised on 2 June 1734 in Ardingly.

      3. Elizabeth West was born on 15 October 1737 and baptised on 16 October 1737.

   2. Susanna Symonds was born on 24 April  1703 and baptised on 7 May 1703 in Ardingly.  She married William Woolven in 1724.  (They have their own page.)

   3. William Symonds was baptised on 28 October 1705 and baptised on 5 November 1705 in Ardingly.

   7. Mary Symonds was baptised on 30 March 1716 in Ardingly.

      As Mary Simons she may have married George Lander on 11 June 1735 in Ardingly.  George was then of Clayton and Mary of Ardingly.

8. Sarah Symonds was baptised on 18 April 1680 in Ardingly.
