Arthur SILVERSON (c1854-1933)

and Lucy TRIGWELL (1860-?)

Arthur Silverson and Lucy Trigwell married by banns on 8 April 1882 in Edburton, Sussex.  Arthur was then a 28 year old bachelor and engine driver of Upper Beeding.  Lucy was a 22 year old spinster of Edburton.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ellen Trigwell and George Barber.  The groom made his mark, but the bride and witnesses signed their names.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  They were the great grandparents of John Silverson.)

Arthur Silverson was born about 1853/4 in Woodmancote.  He was the son of John Silverson (1816-1884) and Rebecca Parsons (1817-1854).  Arthur died aged 79 years in the first quarter of 1933.

Lucy Trigwell was born on 9 February 1860 in Rottingdean, Sussex and baptised on 18 March 1860 in Hove, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Charles Trigwell (1817-1901) and Ann Weller (1822-1909).  Lucy was a year old at the time of the 1861 census and living with her parents and elder siblings at Garden Cottages in Southwick, Sussex.

In 1901 the family were living in Fulking, Sussex and Arthur was an engine driver on a farm.

 Arthur Silverson and Lucy Trigwell had 6 known children:

1. Mary Ann Silverson was born on 25 September 1882 and baptised on 5 November 1882 in Upper Beeding.

   Mary Ann married Jack Reed in the fourth quarter of 1909.

   Jack was born in 1880.

   Jack and Mary Ann had the following child:

   1. Albert E. Reed was born in 1913.

2. John Alfred Silverson was born on 24 May 1884 and baptised on 6 July 1884 in Upper Beeding.  He died in 1960.

   John married Florence Bessie Parker.

   Florence was born on 24 May 1884 in Greenham, Berkshire.  She died in 1973.

   John and Florence had 2 sons:

   1. Thomas Arthur Charles Silverson was born on 17 December 1919.  He was buried on 21 February 1984 in Hollington, Sussex.

   2. Arthur Jack Silverson was born on 29 May 1923.  He died on 27 July 1994 in London, Ontario, Canada.

3. Charles Thomas Silverson was born on 14 November 1886 and baptised on 2 December 1886 in Upper Beeding, at which time his father was an engine driver of Upper Beeding.

   Charles married twice.  Firstly to Alice Parsons on 5 September 1908 at St. Mary's, Shoreham-by-Sea (thanks to Mark Tilbury for this date).  He then marrie Winifred K. I. Butcher in the first quarter of 1920 and soon after they married they emigrated to Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.

   Charles and Alice had the following children:

   1. Nellie May Silverson was born on 28 November 1911 at 21 Ham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea.  She died on 15 January 1998.  Nellie married Christopher Tilbury on 17 June 1932 in Horsham, Sussex.  (Thanks to Mark Tilbury for the details about Nellie.)

   2. Arthur T. Silverson was born in the second quarter of 1913 and died in the fourth quarter of 1914.  (Again thanks to Mark.)

   3. Charles G. L. Silverson was born in the third quarter of 1914.

4. Thomas Emery Silverson was born on 9 December 1888 and baptised on 6 January 1889 in Edburton.  He died aged 64 years on 17 October 1953 and was buried with his wife in Ashington.

   Thomas married Ada Florence May Taylor in the second quarter of 1914 in the Thakeham registration district.

   Ada was born in 1899.  She died aged 45 years on 6 July 1934.

   Thomas and Ada had the following children:

   1. Gladys A. M. Silverson was born in the third quarter of 1914.

   2. John A. C. Silverson was born in the second quarter of 1917.

   3. Doris I. C. Silverson was born in the first quarter of 1920.

   4. Audrey L. M. Silverson was born in the third quarter of 1922.

   5. Thomas E. F. Silverson was born in the second quarter of 1928.

5. Ellen Maria Silverson was born on 12 September 1891 in Small Dole, Sussex and baptised on 18 October 1891 in Upper Beeding.

   Ellen married Arthur Tompson.

6. Ethel May Silverson was born on 13 September 1894 and baptised on 4 November 1894 in Edburton.  She died in 1966 in New South Wales, Australia (ref. Enfield, Burwood 28210).

   Ethel married Frederick Arthur Dennett in the third quarter of 1919 in the Thakeham registration district.

   Frederick was born in 1889, possibly in Sompting, Sussex and possibly the son of Alfred Dennett and Eliza Mercer.  He enlisted in the Australian Army during WW1.  After the war he and Ethel emigrated to Australia.
