Thomas SHOULDERS (1798-?)

and Elizabeth POTTER (1806-?)

Thomas Shoulders and Elizabeth Potter married by banns on 21 June 1829 in Newtimber, Sussex.  He was then of Henfield and she of Newtimber.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Shoulder may have been baptised on 18 February 1798 in Henfield, Sussex and have been the son of Samuel Shoulder and Mary.  Or was he the son of Thomas Shoulders and Philadelphia Trengmer?

Elizabeth Potter may have been born about 1806 in Newtimber, but I have not found a baptism for her in the Newtimber baptism register.  She may have been the daughter of Samuel Potter and Mary Child who had married in Newtimber in 1802.  But, they had a son John baptised in 1806 in Newtimber.

When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in the High Street, New Shoreham and Thomas was a sawyer.  They were living in Henfield in 1851 and Thomas was an agricultural labourer.

Thomas Shoulders and Elizabeth Potter had 6 known children:

  1. Mary Shoulder was baptised on 31 January 1830 in Henfield.  She may have died young as she was not living with her parents at the time of the 1841 census.  Did she marry George Woolgar?

  2. Harriet Shoulder was baptised on 13 March 1831 in Henfield.  She was 10 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.  She died aged 36 years and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1867 in the Steyning registration district as Harriet Peacock.

As Harriet Shoulders she married Michael Peacock by banns on 1 April 1850 in Henfield.  He was then a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  They were both of Henfield, both of full age and both made their marks.  The witnesses to the marriage were George Rogers and Barbara Peacock who also both made their marks.  Their fathers were named as Michael Peacock a labourer and Thomas Shoulders a sawyer. They were married by the vicar Charles Dunlop.

In 1851 they were living with Harriet's parents in Henfield and Michael was a 20 year old agricultural labourer.  The 1861 census records Michael and his son Thomas, twice!  One entry has them living together in Southwick, whilst the other sees them with Harriet and their daughter Sarah in Woodmancote.

Michael was baptised on 24 May 1829 in Woodmancote, Sussex and was the son of Michael Peacock (1793-?) and Ann Saunders.  Michael remarried after Harriet's death, to Emma Nye, widow, in 1868.  As Emma Leavitt she had previously married Amos Nye in 1852 in Westmeston, Sussex.

Michael and Harriet had the following known children:

    1. Thomas Peacock was born in 1850 in Henfield.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1861.

    3. Susan Peacock was baptised on 14 October 1855 in Henfield.  She was not living with her parents at the time of the 1861 census.  Her death may have been registered in the second quarter of 1856 in the Steyning registration district.

    4. Harriet Elizabeth Peacock was baptised on 29 July 1861 in Southwick, Sussex.

  3. Susan Shoulder was baptised on 28 March/April 1833 in Henfield.  She was 8 years old in 1841.  She may have married William Welling on 9 May 1852 in Southwick.

  5. William Shoulders was baptised on 9 April 1837 in Henfield.  He was 4 years old in 1841.  In 1851 he was a 14 year old agricultural labourer living at home.  He was a witness to the 1864 marriage of his brother Samuel at which time he made his mark.  William died in 1906.

William married Agnes Blann by banns on 11 October 1862 in Henfield.  He was then of full age and a bachelor and labourer of Henfield.  Agnes was also of full age and a spinster of Henfield.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Shoulders a labourer and Edmund Blann a sawyer.  The witnesses to the marriage were Abraham Woolgar (marked) and Harriet Vinnall (signed).  William made his mark and Agnes signed her name.  (Abraham and Harriet married in Henfield on 22 November 1862.)

Agnes was baptised on 6 October 1840 in Upper Beeding, Sussex and was the daughter of Edmund Blann and Mary Barber.  When the 1891 census was recorded, Agnes was a 50 year old married monthly nurse in the home of George Peirce and his wife Esther in Nep Town Henfield.  The census reference is folio 103 page 19.  Her husband and son were also living in Nep Town, but not at the same address, and the census reference for them was folio 106 page 26.

The 1871 census records that the family were living in Nep Town, but by 1881 they had moved to Church Lane in Henfield.  William was a farm labourer in 1871 and an agricultural labourer in 1881.  By 1891 he was a general labourer and living with his son James.  In 1901 William was living with his son Albert in New Shoreham.
