and Elizabeth Potter married by banns
on 21 June 1829 in Newtimber, Sussex. He was then of Henfield and she
of Newtimber. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
Thomas Shoulder may have been baptised on 18 February 1798 in Henfield, Sussex
and have been the son of Samuel Shoulder and Mary. Or
was he the son of Thomas Shoulders and Philadelphia Trengmer?
Elizabeth Potter may have been born about 1806 in Newtimber, but I
have not found a baptism for her in the Newtimber baptism register.
She may have been the daughter of Samuel Potter and Mary Child
who had married in Newtimber in 1802. But, they had a son John
baptised in 1806 in Newtimber.
When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in the High Street,
New Shoreham and Thomas was a sawyer. They were living in Henfield in
1851 and Thomas was an agricultural labourer.

was baptised on 31 January 1830 in Henfield. She may have died young
as she was not living with her parents at the time of the 1841 census.
Did she marry George Woolgar?
Shoulder was baptised on 13 March 1831 in Henfield. She was 10
years old when the 1841 census was recorded. She died aged 36 years
and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1867 in the Steyning
registration district as Harriet Peacock.
Shoulders she married Michael Peacock by banns on 1 April 1850 in
Henfield. He was then a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.
They were both of Henfield, both of full age and both made their marks.
The witnesses to the marriage were George Rogers and Barbara
Peacock who also both made their marks. Their fathers were named
as Michael Peacock a labourer and Thomas Shoulders a sawyer.
They were married by the vicar Charles Dunlop.
In 1851 they were
living with Harriet's parents in Henfield and Michael was a 20 year old
agricultural labourer. The 1861 census records Michael and his son
Thomas, twice! One entry has them living together in Southwick,
whilst the other sees them with Harriet and their daughter Sarah in
baptised on 24 May 1829 in Woodmancote, Sussex and was the son of
Michael Peacock (1793-?) and Ann Saunders. Michael
remarried after Harriet's death, to Emma Nye, widow, in 1868.
As Emma Leavitt she had previously married Amos Nye in 1852
in Westmeston, Sussex.
Harriet had the following known children:
Peacock was born in 1850 in Henfield. He was an 11 year old
scholar in 1861.
Peacock was baptised on 14 November 1852 in Henfield. She was
8 years old in 1861.
Peacock was baptised on 14 October 1855 in Henfield. She was
not living with her parents at the time of the 1861 census. Her
death may have been registered in the second quarter of 1856 in the
Steyning registration district.
Elizabeth Peacock was baptised on 29 July 1861 in Southwick, Sussex.
was baptised on 28 March/April 1833 in Henfield. She was 8 years old in
1841. She may have married William Welling on 9 May 1852 in

years old in 1841. The death of a Sarah Ann Shoulders was
registered in the third quarter of 1844 in the Steyning registration

was a 14 year old agricultural labourer living at home. He was a
witness to the 1864 marriage of his brother Samuel at which time he made
his mark. William died in 1906.
Agnes Blann by banns on 11 October 1862 in Henfield. He was
then of full age and a bachelor and labourer of Henfield. Agnes was
also of full age and a spinster of Henfield. Their fathers were
named as Thomas Shoulders a labourer and Edmund Blann a
sawyer. The witnesses to the marriage were Abraham Woolgar
(marked) and Harriet Vinnall (signed). William made his mark
and Agnes signed her name. (Abraham and Harriet married in Henfield
on 22 November 1862.)
baptised on 6 October 1840 in Upper Beeding, Sussex and was the daughter
of Edmund Blann and Mary Barber. When the 1891 census
was recorded, Agnes was a 50 year old married monthly nurse in the home of
George Peirce and his wife Esther in Nep Town Henfield.
The census reference is folio 103 page 19. Her husband and son were
also living in Nep Town, but not at the same address, and the census
reference for them was folio 106 page 26.
The 1871 census
records that the family were living in Nep Town, but by 1881 they had
moved to Church Lane in Henfield. William was a farm labourer in
1871 and an agricultural labourer in 1881. By 1891 he was a general
labourer and living with his son James. In 1901 William was living
with his son Albert in New Shoreham.
William and Agnes
had 4 known children:
Thomas Shoulders was baptised on 8 March 1863 in Henfield. He
died in 1938. William married Elizabeth Sophia Rowe.
Elizabeth was born in 1867 and died in 1943.
William and Elizabeth had the following children:
William Shoulders was born in 1889. He died in 1952 or 1955 in
Southlands Hospital, Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex. Frank married
Harriot Fanny Mildred Redford on 28 February 1916 at St. Peter's in
Rochester, Kent. She was born in 1884 in Shoreham.
Agnes Shoulders was born in 1891 and died in 1954.
Shoulders was born in 1893 and died in 1961.
Shoulders was born in 1895 and died in 1935. Bertram married
Lily May Streeter. Lily was born on 30 December 1902 in
Lewes. She was the daughter of Thomas Streeter and Sarah
Shoulders was born in 1897 and died in 1972.
Shoulders was bon in 1903 and died in 1969.
Shoulders was born in 1905 and died in 1992.
Shoulders was baptised on 10 December 1865 in Henfield.
Albert Shoulders was baptised on 9
July 1871 in Henfield. He was a publican.
Minnie Childs in the fourth quarter of 1890 in the Brighton
Minnie was born about 1869 in Brighton,
Sussex and was the daughter of
Alfred Childs (c1840-?) and
Emily Dowlen (1839-?).
Albert and Minnie had 3 known children:
Alfred Shoulders was born about 1892 in Brighton. He was
a shoe repairer and cobbler. He married Louise Martin.
Ernest Shoulders was born about 1895 in Brighton. He died
on 26 August 1961 in St. Leonards in New South Wales, Australia.
Sydney Frank Shoulders was born about 1896 in Brighton.
He died on 21 June 1956 in Shoreham, Sussex. He was a

year old house boy.
Samuel Potter Shoulders was born
on 26 February 1839 in Shoreham, Sussex and was baptised on 12 May 1839 in
Henfield. He was 2 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.
In 1851 he was a 12 year agricultural labourer.
Harriet Silverson by banns on 26 March 1864 in
Henfield. He was then a bachelor and labourer of St. Marylebone in
Middlesex. She was a spinster of Henfield. Samuel was unable to
sign his name, but Harriet could sign her name. The witnesses to the
marriage were William Shoulders (marked) and Mary Ann Silverson
baptised on 7 June 1840 in Woodmancote, Sussex and was the daughter of
John Silverson (1816-1884) and
Rebecca Parsons (1817-1854). She died aged 44 years in

William Thomas Shoulders was
baptised on 9 July 1865 in Henfield. In 1901 William was a
Stoner Hole in 1890.
Alice was born about 1867 in Patcham,
Sussex and was the daughter of
Anthony Hole (1843-1899) and
(1845-?). (Ann was a cousin of William's mother.) Alice died
in about 1906.
William and Alice had 4 known children:
Alice Harriet Shoulders was born on 1 July 1891. She died
in 1987. Alice married Arthur Wale on 25 December 1914.
Dorothy May Shoulders was born in 1894 and died in about 1917.
William Charles A. Shoulders was born in 1899.
Rebecca Frances Shoulders was born in 1900
Annie Shoulders was born
about 1867 in London.
Albert Potter Shoulders was
born in 1872 in Marylebone, London. He died on 5 August 1908 in
Albert married Alice Emma
Styles on 12 April 1896 at St. Marylebone parish church in London.
Alice was born on 13 September 1871 in London. She died on 25
December 1961 in Paddington, London. In 1901 the family were living in Paddington,
London and Albert was a postman.
Albert and Alice had 4 known children:
Frederick Shoulders was born about 1873.
Queenie Shoulders was born about 1875.
