William SETFORD (1754-?)

and Elizabeth MARDEN (1759-?)

 

William Sutford and Elizabeth Marden married by banns on 1 April 1777 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  A witness to their marriage was John Godmatt.

William Setford was baptised on 18 July 1754 in Worth, Sussex.  He was the son of John Setford and Ann.

Elizabeth Marden was baptised on 18 February 1759 in Horsted, Keynes, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Marden and Mary.

 

William Setford and Elizabeth Marden had 6 known children:

  1. John Setford was baptised on 21 September 1777 in Horsted, Keynes, Sussex.  Might he have married Mary Wood by banns on 29 July 1798 in West Firle, Sussex?  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  They were both of West Firle and both made their X marks.  The witnesses to the marriage were Mary ? and James Cornford who both signed their names.  However, he may have had 2 cousins, John Setford born in 1771 and  John Setford in 1775.  John and Mary had 1 known daughter, Elizabeth Setford who was born on 16 November and baptised on 29 November 1798 in Cliffe.

  2. Mary Setford was baptised on 18 April 1779 in Horsted Keynes.   Did she married Obadiah Croutch by banns on 18 April 1809 in Hartfield, Sussex.  At the time they were both of Hartfield.  Another Mary Setford was born in 1776.

  3. Ann Setford was baptised on 8 October 1780 in Horsted Keynes.  Did she marry William Upton by banns on 25 March 1811 in East Grinstead, Sussex?  She was then of East Grinstead and he of West Hoathly.

  4. William Setford was baptised on 27 October 1782 in Horsted Keynes.

  5. Elizabeth Sutford was baptised on 15 October 1786 in West Hoathly, Sussex.  Did she marry George Watson by licence on 19 January 1805 in East Grinstead?  She was then of East Grinstead and he of West Hoathly.  However, she may have had 2 cousins, Elizabeth Setford born in 1778 and Elizabeth Setford born in 1784.

  6. Louisa Setford was baptised on 13 July 1788 in Horsted Keynes.  Did she marry Richard Constable on 23 November 1819 at St. Michael's in Withyham, Sussex?  They were both then of Withyham.

Might William and Elizabeth have had another son, Henry Setford, who according to the 1851 census was born about 1788 in Horsted Keynes?  Henry's wife was born in 1781, so might Henry have been born in the gap between 1782 William and 1786 Elizabeth?  When Henry married in 1803 one of the witnesses was Mary Setford - might she have been his sister born in 1779?
