Stephen SETFORD
(1790-?)
and Elizabeth WARREN (c1795-?)

Stephen
Setford and
Elizabeth Warren were
married by banns on 31 May 1818 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. They
were both then of Horsted Keynes. The witnesses
to their marriage were James Wellfare and Ann Setford.
(They were not my direct ancestors.)
Stephen
Setford was baptised on 28 March 1790
in Horsted Keynes. He was the son of
John Setford
and Ann. In 1851 he was a 61 year old widower and agricultural
labourer, living with his married daughter Emma in Godstone, Surrey. Another
Stephen Setford was born in 1785 in Chailey, Sussex, the son of
Henry Setford
and Elizabeth
Peckham. I believe the 2 Stephens were cousins and that
Chailey Stephen remained single.
Elizabeth Warren's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She died before 1841. Her
death may have been registered in the fourth quarter of 1837 in the Godstone
registration district.
When the 1841 census was recorded, Stephen was said to be a 45 year old
agricultural labourer and constable, living at Whitewood in Horne, Surrey.
The census notes he was not born in Surrey. Also with him on census
night were 3 of his children, 50 year old housekeeper Mary Setford
and 50 year old Jane Botley, neither of whom were born in
Surrey.
Stephen Setford and
Elizabeth Warren had 6 known children:
-
Stephen Setford was born on 10 January 1821 in Horsted Keynes and
baptised on 18 February 1821 at the Independent Chapel in Lindfield, Sussex.
-
Mary Ann Setford was baptised on 16 May 1824 in Horsted Keynes.
-
Emma Sitford was baptised on 11 June 1826 in Horsted Keynes.
Emma married George Charman on 4 December 1847 in Worth, Sussex.
When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in Godstone,
Surrey along with their young daughter and Emma's father, Stephen.
George was then a 26 year old agricultural labourer.
George and Emma had the following known daughter:
-
Ann Charman was born about 1849 in Home, Surrey. She was 2
years old in 1851.
-
Henry Sitford was baptised on 12 April 1829 in Horsted Keynes.
In 1841 he was 10 years old and the eldest of his siblings living at

-
George Ireland Setford was baptised on 6 November 1831 in Horsted
Keynes. In 1841, George was 8 years old.
George married Ursula Wood in the first quarter of 1854
in the Godstone registration district.
Ursula died aged 59 years in the
fourth quarter of 1894.
When the 1881 census was recorded the family
were living at 9 Block Cottages in Godstone and George was a general
labourer. Also living within the household at that time were 2
nephews, William Wood aged 24 and Robert Wood aged 22, who
were both single and farm labourers. By the time of 1901 census
George was still living in Godstone where he was a roadman.
George
and Ursula had at least 6 children:
-
George Ireland Sitford was born about 1859 in Godstone, Surrey.
George married Maria Payne in the fourth quarter of 1880 in the
Godstone district.
Maria was born about 1861 in Godstone.
When
the 1901 census was recorded the family were living in Godstone and
George was a bricklayer.
They had the following known children:
