John SETFORD (1837-?)

and Jane STEVENSON (c1847-?)

 

John Sitford and Jane Stevenson married in the first quarter of 1867.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Setford was baptised on 11 June 1837 in Maresfield, Sussex.  He was the son of William Setford (1804-?) and Ann Wood (c1806-?).  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 4 years old and living with his parents in Ford Green, Nutley in the parish of Maresfield.

Jane Stevenson was born about 1847-9 in Maresfield.

When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Nutley Street, Maresfield and John was then an agricultural labourer.  Their surname was spelt Litford in the 1881 on-line census transcript.  Also with the family at that time was John's brother Abraham.  By 1901, John was a fishmonger living in Horsted Keynes and the family name was spelt Setford, which is the more usual form.

 

John Setford and Jane had 11 known children:

  1. Harriet Setford was born about 1867 in Maresfield.  In 1881 she was 14 years old and living at home.

  2. Alfred Setford was born about 1869 in Maresfield.  He was a 12 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1901, Fred Setford was a 32 year old brickmaker living Horsted Keynes.

  3. William Abraham Sitford was born in the third quarter of 1871 in Maresfield.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1881. 

    William married Alice Simmons in the fourth quarter of 1894 in the Cuckfield registration district.  Alice was born about 1875 in Streat, Sussex.

    In 1901 the family were living in Horsted Keynes and William was a 29 year old brickmaker.  Sometime between 1901 and 1913 the family moved to the Three Bridges area near Crawley and William was at various times a fishmonger and greengrocer.  He also made deliveries by horse and cart.

    William and Alice had 3 known children:

    1. Mabel Setford was born about 1896 in West Hoathly.  She was 5 years old in 1901.

    2. Charles Setford was born about 1898 in West Hoathly.  He was a 3 year old in 1901.

    3. William Setford was born in 1900 in Horsted Keynes.  He was 6 months old when the 1901 census was recorded.

  4. Fanny Sitford was born in the third quarter of 1873 in Maresfield.  In 1881 she was a 7 year old scholar.

  5. John Sitford was born in the first quarter of 1875 in Maresfield.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1901 he was a 26 year old brickmaker and fishmonger living in Horsted Keynes.

  6. Mary J. Setford was born about 1877 in Maresfield.  In 1881 she was 4 years old.

  7. Susan Louise Sitford was born in the second quarter of 1879 in Maresfield.  She was 2 years old in 1881.  She was 22 years old in 1901 and living in Horsted Keynes.

  8. Harry Setford was born about 1882 in Maresfield.  He was a 19 year old brickmaker in 1901 and living Horsted Keynes.

  9. Ruth Sitford was born in the fourth quarter of 1887 in Maresfield.  She was 13 years old in 1901.

  10. Ellen Setford was born about 1890 in Maresfield. She was 11 years old in 1901.

  11. Ernest Setford was born about 1892 in Horsted Keynes.  He was a 9 year old in 1901.
