John SETFORD (c1815-?)

and Mary (c1818-?)

 

John Setford and Mary may have married before or about 1850.

John Setford was born about 1815 in Edenbridge, Kent.  He was the son of David Setford (1774-1851) and Jane Hastings (c1779-1826).  He may have died in the fourth quarter of 1897 in Godstone, Surrey.

Mary was born about 1818 in Worth, Sussex.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living in New Chapel Road in Lingfield, Surrey and John was a 66 year old baker employing 2 boys.  Also living with them at that time were 2 servants, namely 19 year old John Cheale and 14 year old Charles Stripp.

 

John Setford and Mary may have had the following children:

  1. William John Sitford was born about 1851 in Edenbridge.  (Not sure whether he was a son of John and Mary.)

    William married Mary Ann Beatrice Ware in the third quarter of 1875 in the St. Olave, Southwark registration district.

    Mary Ann Beatrice was baptised on 19 May 1850 at All Saints in Lewes, Sussex and was the daughter of Thomas Wear and Mary Ann.

    When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living at 8 Liverpool Lawn in Ramsgate, Kent.  William was then a drapers assistant.  Also in the household at that time were:  wife's sister Ellen Rose Ware (33); visitor and Physician MD Cambridge Charles L. Robertson (55); general domestic servant Harriet Bubb (20); and nurse Susan A. Clarke (55).

    By 1881 the couple had the following children:

    1. Annie Sitord was born in about 1870 in Brighton, Sussex.  In 1881 she was an 11 year old scholar.

    2. Rose Sitford was born about 1872 in Lewes, Sussex.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1881.

    3. Edith Sitford was born about 1876 in Brighton.  She was a 5 year old scholar in 1881.

  2. Frederick Sitford was born about 1855 in Lingfield, Surrey.  He married Louisa Caroline Weeks in the fourth quarter of 1876 in the Hollingbourne registration district.  She was born about 1858 in Lenham, Kent.  When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living in East Street, Harrietsham, Kent, and Frederick was then a corn miller.

  3. George Sitford was born about 1856 in Lingfield.  He was an unmarried 25 year old in 1881 living with his parents.
