John SETFORD (c1747-1830)

and Ann (c1749-1835)

John Setford and Ann may have married sometime before or about 1771, but no possible marriage has been found in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.

John Setford was baptised as an adult on 23 May 1768 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.  Might he have been the son of John Setford and Ann?  He died aged 83 years and was buried on 19 October 1830 in Horsted Keynes.

Ann's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been a witnesses to her son Stephen's 1818 marriage in Horsted Keynes.  She died aged 86 years and was buried on 6 September 1835 in Horsted Keynes.

John Setford and Ann had 9 known children:

  1. John Setford was baptised on 15 December 1771 in Horsted Keynes.

Might he have married Mary Wood by banns on 29 July 1798 in West Firle, Sussex?  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  They were both of West Firle and both made their X marks.  The witnesses to the marriage were Mary ? and James Cornford who both signed their names.  However, he may have had 2 cousins, John Setford born in 1775 and John Setford in 1777.  John and Mary had 1 known daughter, Elizabeth Setford who was born on 16 November and baptised on 29 November 1798 in Cliffe.

  2. Anne Setford was baptised on 20 February 1774 in Horsted Keynes.  Did she marry William Cripps by banns on 14 November 1794 in East Grinstead, Sussex?  She was then of East Grinstead and he of Fletching.

  3. Mary Setford was baptised on 3 March 1776 in Horsted Keynes.  Did she married Obadiah Croutch by banns on 18 April 1809 in Hartfield, Sussex.  At the time they were both of Hartfield.  Another Mary Setford was born in 1779.

  4. Elizabeth Setford was baptised on 31 May 1778 in Horsted Keynes.  Did she marry George Watson by licence on 19 January 1805 in East Grinstead?  She was then of East Grinstead and he of West Hoathly.  However, she may have had 2 cousins, Elizabeth Setford born in 1784 and Elizabeth Setford born in 1786.

  5. William Setford was baptised on 11 September 1780 in Horsted Keynes.

  6. James Setford was baptised on 6 November 1785 in Horsted Keynes and buried there on 10 May 1786.

  7. Thomas Setford was baptised on 1 July 1787 in Horsted Keynes and buried there on 4 January 1789.  The burial register noted that his parents were paupers.

  8. Stephen Setford was baptised on 28 March 1790 in Horsted Keynes.  He married Elizabeth Warren in 1818.  (They have their own page.)

  9. Joseph Setford was baptised on 24 March 1793 in Horsted Keynes.  When the 1841 census was recorded he may have been a 50 year old agricultural labourer living in the home of William King in Edenbridge, Kent.

Joseph may have first married Mary Steer on 20 November 1814 in Edenbridge, and and then Mary Chapman on 16 October 1821 in Limpsfield, Surrey, at which time he was of Edenbridge.

Joseph and his first wife may have had the following children:

    1. John Sitford was baptised on 22 November 1814 in Edenbridge.

    2. Stephen Sitford was baptised on 19 January 1817 in Edenbridge.  His death may have been registered in the fourth quarter of 1863 in the Hollingbourne, Kent registration district.

Stephen married Louisa Bryant in the fourth quarter of 1839 in the St. Saviour, Southwark registration district.

The death of 82 year old Louisa Sitford was registered in the fourth quarter of 1898 in the Hollingbourne registration district.  When the 1871 census was recorded she was a 52 year old widow and monthly nurse living in the home of William Green at Pole Hill in Harrietsham in Kent.

When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living at Malthouse in Lingfield, Surrey.  Stephen was then a 33 year old agricultural labourer and gave his place of birth as Crowhurst, Surrey.  Louisa was 30 years old and said she was born in Lingfield.  In addition to their own 4 children with them on census night, they also had a 2 year old nurse child, Ellen Friend.  In 1861 the family were living at Pivington in Lenham, Kent.  Stephen was then said to be a 44 years old shepherd and gave his place of birth as Edenbridge.  Lousia was 42 years old and said she was born in Lingfield.

Stephen and Louisa had 8 known children:

      1. Sarah Setford was baptised on 28 June 1840 in Lingfield, Surrey.  Her mother's name was then recorded as Lucy

      2. George Setford was baptised on 19 December 1841 in Lingfield.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1851 and the eldest of his siblings living at home.

      3. Mary Ann Setford was baptised on 19 May 1844 in Lingfield.  She was 6 years old in 1851.

      4. Susannah Setford was baptised on 28 November 1847 in Lingfield.  She was 4 years old in 1851.

        Susannah married John Hampshire.

When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living in a Cottage in Lenham.  John was then a 28 year old agricultural labourer.  With them on census night were their 2 children, brother-in-law Stephen Sitford and sister-in-law Louisa Sitford.

John and Susannah had the following known children:

        1. Henry G. Hampshire was born about about 1866 in Orphington, Kent.  He was a 5 year old scholar in 1871.

        2. William F. S. Hampshire was born about 1869 in Tong, Kent.  He was 2 years old in 1871.

      5. Emily Setford was baptised on 27 May 1849 in Lingfield.  Her mother's name was then recorded as Lucy.  In 1851 she was 2 years old.  In 1861 she was an 11 year old scholar and the eldest of her siblings living at home.

      6. Stephen Setford was baptised on 30 November 1851 in Lingfield.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1861.  In 1871 he was 19 years old and an invalid.  He was then living with the family of his elder sister Susanna.

      7. Frederick Setford was baptised on 28 May 1854 in Lingfield.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1861.

      8. Henry Setford was born about 1857 in Lenham.  He was 4 years old when the 1861 census was recorded.

      9. Louisa Sitford was born about 1864 in Lenham.  She was a 7 year old scholar in 1871 and living with the family of her elder sister.

    3. George Sitford was baptised on 28 March 1819 in Edenbridge.

Might John and Ann have had another son, Henry Setford, who according to the 1851 census was born about 1788 in Horsted Keynes?  Henry's wife was born in 1781, so might Henry have been born in the gap between 1780 William and 1785 James?  When Henry married in 1803 one of the witnesses was Mary Setford - might she have been his sister born in 1776?

I think John born about 1745 may have been the son of John Setford and Ann, because:

bullet

John and Ann senior and junior both named sons Joseph.

bullet

John and Ann junior named a son Stephen, as did another possible son of John and Ann senior.

bullet

John and Ann junior named a sons William and James, and John junior may have had a brothers by those names.

bullet

John and Ann junior's children were baptised in Horsted Keynes, as were those of William and Elizabeth, and William was a son of John and Ann senior.
