John SETFORD
(c1720-?)
and Ann (c1725-?)

John
Setford and
Ann
may have married sometime before or about 1745, but no possible
marriage has been found in the Sussex marriage index.
John
Setford's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. He may have died in or
before 1762.
Ann's
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
John Setford and Ann may
have had the following children:
-
Charles
Setford married Hannah sometime before or about 1771.
(They have their own page.) Charles and Hannah may have had children
baptised in Horsted Keynes, Rusper and Maresfield. NOTE - I can not be certain
Charles was a son of John and
Ann.
-
John Setford
was born about 1747 and died aged 83 years in 1830. He was baptised as an adult on 23 May 1768 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
John married Ann before or about 1771. (They have their own
page.) John and Ann raised their family in Horsted Keynes. NOTE - I can not be certain John was a son of John and
Ann.
-
Henry Setford
was born about 1749/50. He married
Elizabeth Peckham
in 1773. (They have their own page.) Henry and Elizabeth
raised their family in Chailey. NOTE - I can not
be certain Henry was a son of John and Ann.
-
Elizabeth Setford married Thomas Walker on 15 August 1776 in
Oxted, Surrey. NOTE - I can not
be certain Elizabeth was a daughter of John and Ann.
-
William
Setford was baptised on 18 July 1754 in Worth, Sussex. He
married Elizabeth Marden
in 1777. (The have their own page.) William
and Elizabeth raised their family in Horsted Keynes. His
parents were named as John and Ann
-
Joseph Setford was baptised on 3 March 1757 in Ifield, Sussex.
At time, his parents were described as Travellers. He married
Barbara Hollingdale in 1785. (They have their own
page.) Joseph and Barbara may have raised their family in Westmeston.
-
Moses Setford married
Mary Wakeling in 1787. (They have their own page.)
Moses and Mary raised their family in Lindfield. He was of Newick
when he married. NOTE - I can not
be certain Moses was a son of John and Ann.
-
James Setford was baptised on 1 June 1762 in Rusper, Sussex.
Only his mother's name was recorded in the baptism register and she was
described as a traveller woman.
James
married Ann and they had 1 known daughter:
-
Elizabeth Setford was
baptised on 16 May 1784 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Did she marry
George Watson on 19 January 1805 in East Grinstead, Sussex?
Did she marry George Watson by Licence on 19 January 1805 in East
Grinstead? She was then of East Grinstead and he of West Hoathly.
However, she may have had 2 cousins,
Elizabeth Setford born in 1778 and
Elizabeth Setford born in 1786.
-
Martha Setford married William Arnold on 15 January 1787
in Ewhurst, Surrey. NOTE - I can not
be certain Martha was a daughter of John and Ann.
John and Ann would seem to have been the only couple of their generation in
Sussex, but could they really have produced 7 sons who went on to have
families of their own? I would think it unlikely that all the above
were siblings.
John and Ann were described as travellers in 1757, does this mean they were
Romanies? But there doesn't seem to have been any typically Romany
forenames used in the Sussex Setford families.
