Henry SETFORD
(c1788-?)
and Ann STEPHENSON (c1781-?)

Henry Setford
and Ann Stephenson married by
banns on
26 October 1803 in Maresfield, Sussex. He was then of Fletching,
Sussex and
she of Maresfield. A witness to the marriage was
Mary Setford. (They were not my direct
ancestors, but Henry was about 6 years older than my ancestor
Henry Setford, and neither appear to have been baptised.)
Henry Setford was born about 1788 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He
was the miller at Nutley Windmill from at least about 1838. He died
before 1861 as his wife was then recorded as a widow in the census.
It is unlikely he was the son of
Henry Setford
(c1750-1826) and
Elizabeth Peckham (1747-1824), as they had a son named Henry
born in 1773 who would seem to have died aged 72 years in 1845. Might
he have been the son of
John Setford
(1745-?) and Ann, who had 9 known children baptised in Horsted Keynes
between 1771 and 1793? Or, could he have been the son of
William Setford
(1754-?) and Elizabeth Marden
(1759-?) who had 6 children baptised in Horsted
Keynes between 1777 and 1788?
Ann Stephenson was born about 1781 in Maresfield. She may have
died before or about 1871.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living at Bay House, Fords
Green, Nutley in the parish of Maresfield. Also with them at that time
were 13 year old Hannah Setford and 11 year old Alfred Setford.
The couple were still living in Nutley when the 1851 census was recorded.
Henry
Setford and Ann Stephenson had 2 known children:
-
William
Setford was
baptised on 22 July 1804 in Maresfield. He married
Ann Wood
in 1827. (They have their own page.)
-
Clara Setford was born about 1810 in Maresfield.
