Henry SETFORD (c1750-1826)

and Elizabeth PECKHAM (1747-1824)

 

Henry Setford and Elizabeth Peckham married by banns on 14 April 1773 in Chailey, Sussex.  He was then of Fletching in Sussex and she of Chailey.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Burtenshaw and John Baker.

Henry Setford died aged 76 years and was buried on 4 January 1826 in Chailey, therefore, he was born about 1749/50.  Might he have been the son of John Setford and Ann?

Elizabeth Peckham was baptised on 17 October 1747 in Chailey.  She was the daughter of John Peckham and Susan Vinall.  Elizabeth died aged 79 years (according to the burial register) and was buried on 8 September 1824 in Chailey.

 

Henry Setford and Elizabeth Peckham had 9 known children:

  1. Henry Setford was baptised on 11 July 1773 in Chailey.  He died aged 72 years and was buried on 9 December 1845 in Newick, Sussex.  Might he have been the father of Henry Setford born about 1794?  When the 1841 census was recorded he may have been the 60 year old Henry Setford, servant, living in Newick Green.  Also living in the same household at that time were 2 sisters, Charlotte Sawyers and Louisa Sawyers, and their elder sister married Henry Setford born in about 1794.

  2. John Setford was baptised on 19 November 1775 in Chailey.  He was buried on 22 September 1832 in Newick.

    John he have married Mary Wood by banns on 29 July 1798 in West Firle, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  They were both of West Firle and both made their X marks.  The witnesses to the marriage were Mary ? and James Cornford who both signed their names.  However, he may have had 2 cousins, John Setford born in 1771 and  John Setford in 1777.

    John and Mary had 1 known daughter:

    1. Elizabeth Selford who was born on 16 November and baptised on 29 November 1798 in Cliffe, near Lewes, Sussex.

  3. Sarah Setford was baptised on 26 July 1778 in Chailey.

  4. William Setford was baptised on 18 June 1780 in Wivelsfield, Sussex.

  5. Simeon Setford was baptised on 17 November 1782 in Wivelsfield.  He was buried on 18 May 1794 in Chailey.

  6. Stephen Setford was baptised on 20 February 1785 in Chailey.  He died aged 71 years (according to the burial register) and was buried on 19 September 1860 in Chailey.  In 1851 he was living at Spoon Cottage in Chailey and he was then an agricultural labourer.  Another Stephen Setford was born in 1790.

  7. Thomas Setford was baptised on 13 May 1787 in Chailey.

  8. Elizabeth Setford was baptised on 8 November 1789 in Chailey.  She was a servant.  Elizabeth died aged 52 years in October 1842 in Lewes, Sussex.

  9. Lucy Setford was baptised on 23 June 1793 in Chailey.  She married James Smith by banns on 15 October 1817 in St. Thomas at Cliffe, near Lewes, Sussex.

Might Henry and Elizabeth have also been the parents of Phoebe Setford who married Edward King on 6 October 1805 in Chailey?  The witnesses to the marriage were John King and John Knapp.
