Charles SETFORD (1804-?)

and Harriet HEASMAN (c1806-1836)

Charles Setford and Harriet Heasman married on 4 February 1826 in Withyham, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Charles Setford was baptised on 20 May 1804 in Capel, Surrey.  He was the son of David Setford (1774-1851) and Jane Hastings (c1779-1826).

Harriet Heasman was born about 1806 in Withyham.  She was the daughter of Samuel Heasman and Ann Fernor.  She died aged 30 years and was buried on 6 November 1836 in Maresfield, Sussex.

When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in Old Forge in Maresfield and Charles was an agricultural labourer.  Also living within the household at that time was 33 year old labourer, Thomas Robison.

Charles Setford and Harriet Heasman had 5 known children:

  1. Jane Harriet Setford was baptised on 25 June 1826 in Withyham.  She was 15 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.

  2. Mary Jane Setford was baptised on 27 April 1828 in Withyham.  She was not living with her father and siblings when the 1841 census was recorded.

  3. Charles David Setford was baptised on 14 February 1830 in Maresfield.  He died aged 59 years in the fourth quarter of 1889 in the Mile End Old Town registration district.  In 1841 he was an 11 year old living at home.

The IGI records that a Charles Setford married Ann Larkins or Willis on 2 June 1850 at All Saints in Stepney, London.

When the 1881 census was recorded Charles and Mary Ann were living at 22 Bere Street, London.  He was then a 'coal weigher'.  Mary Ann was born about 1833 in Ratcliff, Middlesex.

Charles was probably the father of:

    1. Charles David Setford was born in the third quarter of 1853 in the Stepney registration district.  He married Mary Ann Lucy Smith in the fourth quarter of 1880 in the Mile End Old Town district.  When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living at 12 Arbour Square in London.  He was then a letter carrier.  Mary Ann Lucy was born about 1859 in Battersea.

  4. Caroline Elizabeth Setford was baptised on 4 September 1831 in Maresfield.  She was 9 years old in 1841.

  5. Sarah Setford was baptised on 18 October 1835 in Maresfield.  She was not living with her father and siblings when the 1841 census was recorded.
