Charles SETFORD
(c1745-1808)
and Hannah (c1747-1825)

Charles
Setford and
Hannah
may have married sometime before or about 1771, but no possible
marriage has been found in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.
Charles
Setford's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. He may have been the son of
John Setford
and Ann. A Charles Setford, traveller, was
buried on 22 February 1808 in Rusper, Sussex.
Hannah's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She died aged 82 years and was
buried on 25 December 1825 in Horsted Keynes.
Charles Setford and
Hannah may have had the following children:
-
Charles Setford was born about 1771. He died aged 81 years at
the Union House in Uckfield and was buried on 5 June 1852 in Maresfield,
Sussex. NOTE - I can not be certain Charles was a
son of Charles and Hannah.
Might Charles have married Ann
before or about 1828? And might they be the parents of:
-
Hannah Hanel Letford was born on 26 November 1828 and baptised on
15 February 1829 at the Hanover Chapel Dorset Gardens (Independent) in
Bognor Regis, Sussex.
-
Hannah Setford may have been part of this family.
Hannah had an illegitimate daughter:
-
Elizabeth Setford was privately baptised on 19 October 1793 in
Plumpton, Sussex and received into the Church on 27 October 1793.
She died as an infant and was buried on 24 January 1794 in Plumpton.
-
David Setford was baptised on 28 August 1774 in Horsted Keynes,
Sussex. He married twice, firstly to
Jane Hastings
in 1803 and then to
Henrietta Kemp
in 1827. (They have their own page.)
-
Amelia Setford was baptised on 18 January 1778 in Horsted Keynes
and buried there on 22 February 1778.
-
Amelia Selford was baptised on 7
July 1779 in Horsted Keynes. She died aged 91 years and her death
was registered in the third quarter of 1869 in the Cuckfield
registration district.
Amelia married William Marchant
by banns
on 26 December 1798 in Chailey. She was then of Chailey and he of
Lindfield.
The witnesses to the marriage were James Marchant and John
Knapp.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living in Lindfield.
William was then said to be a 65 year old agricultural labourer and
Amelia was 60. Also part of their household was 40 year old
William Marchant, 5 year old Jane Marchant
and 3 year old John Marchant. In 1851, Amelia was
a 72 year old widow living with her 50 year old widower son William at
Pot Croft in Lindfield. Amelia was then a nurse and her son a farm
labourer. The 1861 census records that Amelia was 82 years old and
living with her 60 year old son in Lindfield.
-
Elizabeth Setford was buried on 3 May 1786 in Horsted
Keynes. The burial register noted that she was the daughter of
Charles and Hannah.
