Thomas SURGEON (c1715-1785)

and Elizabeth EVANS (c1720-1780)

St. Peter's, Henfield, circa 1905 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlThomas Surgeon and Elizabeth Evans were most probably my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married at the parish church of St. Peter's in Henfield, Sussex on 1 October 1738.  Thomas was then said to be a sojourner.  Another Thomas Surgeon married Mary Johnson on 21 October 1740 in Henfield.

Thomas Surgeon may have been born on 20 August 1719 and baptised on 30 August 1719 in Henfield.  If so, then he was the son of Richard Surgent and Margery Bud, but I don't think this was him.  Or he may have been baptised on 19 February 1719/20 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex and have been the son of Thomas Sergeant and possibly Mary Holloway, but he would seem to have been a bit to young, as nothing was said at the time of his marriage about being under age.  Thomas died in the poor house and was buried on 2 November 1785.  The burial register recorded his name as Thomas Surgeon.

Elizabeth Evans's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 23 November 1780 in Henfield and the burial register recorded her name as Elizabeth Sergeant.  (See below for details about possible parents and of other Elizabeth Evans of similar age.)  At the moment I think she may have been the daughter of John Evans and Mary who had children baptised in Henfield in 1722, 1724 and 1726.

Thomas Surgeon and Elizabeth Evans had 9 known children:

  1. Mary Surgeon was born on 5 December 1738 and baptised on 27 December 1738 in Henfield.

As Mary Surgeon she may have married John Sayers by banns on 11 June 1765 in Billingshurst.  He was then described as a sojourner and bachelor, whilst she was a spinster from Washington.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Brooks and Ann Sayers.  The banns were published in Billingshurst on 21 and 18 April and 5 June 1765.

  2. John Surgeon was born 30 August 1740 and baptised on 28 September 1740 in Henfield.

  3. Ruth Surgeon was born on 11 April 1742 and baptised on 19 April 1742 in Henfield.  She was buried on 21 September 1742 in Henfield.

  4. Ruth Surgeon was born on 5 February 1743/4 and baptised on 15 February 1743/4 in Henfield.

Ruth married William Patching on 11 October 1762 in Upper Beeding.

William and Ruth had 2 known daughters:

    1. Ann Patching was baptised on 12 May 1765 in Upper Beeding.

    2. Elizabeth Patching was baptised on 17 January 1769 in Upper Beeding.

  5. Thomas Surgeon was born on 3 January 1745/6 and baptised on 5 January 1745/6 in Henfield.

  6. Elizabeth Surgeon, my 5x Great Grandmother, was born on 14 April 1748 and baptised on 24 April 1748 in Henfield.  She married Samuel Lilliott in 1770.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Edmund Surgeon was born on 18 October  1750 and baptised on 7 November 1750 in Henfield.  He was admitted to the church on 19 October.

  8. Catherine Surgeon was born on 10 August 1754 and baptised on 22 August 1754 in Henfield.

As Catherine Sargeant she married James Voice by licence on 11 December 1777 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was a spinster and he was a widower of Billingshurst, Sussex.  They were married by the curate, Miles Williams and the witnesses to their marriage were Henry Wood and John Muzzall.

James and Catherine had the following child:

    1. Richard Foice was privately baptised on 3 May 1795 in Henfield and received into the church on 12 July 1795.

Richard married twice, firstly to Lucy Terry by banns on 8 September 1823 in Henfield.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Geer and Ann Kinsett.  He next married Matilda Stillaway on 3 August 1841 in Henfield.  He was then a widower.  The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Venn and Caroline Venn.

Lucy was baptised on 16 September 1802 in Woodmancote and was the daughter of John Terry and Ann Wood.  The death of Lucy Foice was registered in the second quarter of 1839 in the Steyning registration district.

Richard and Lucy had the following children:

      1. Walter Foice was baptised on 3 October 1824 in Henfield.

      2. Barbara Foyce was baptised on 20 May 1827 in Woodmancote.

      3. Mary Foice was baptised on 17 May 1829 in Henfield.

      4. Caroline Foice was baptised on 29 January 1832 in Henfield.

      5. James Foice was baptised on 17 August 1834 in Henfield.

      6. John Foice was born about 1837/8 in Henfield.

  9. Edward Surgeon was born 27 June 1756 and baptised on 11 July 1756 in Henfield.  He was buried as Edward Serjeant on 14 March 1763 in Henfield

In addition to our Elizabeth Evans having married in 1738 in Henfield, there were 2 other marriages to consider when trying to work out when, where and to whom our Elizabeth was born:

  1. Elizabeth Evans married Thomas Whitton by banns on 29 September 1735 in Shermanbury.  She was of Shermanbury and he was a soujourner of Woodmancote.

  2. Elizabeth Evans married John Barber on 1 December 1737 in Washington.

So far I haven't found a possible baptism for any of them, which I would put about about 1715 +/- 5 years.

There were at least 5 sets of possible of parents:

  1. Thomas Evans of Ashurst and Elizabeth Shaw of Washington married on 6 April 1686 in Washington, Sussex.  Thomas Evans senior was buried on 9 October 1737 in Ashurst.  Elizabeth may have been buried in Ashurst on either 9 September 1710 as Elizabeth Ewens or on 16 June 1747 as Elizabeth Hewens a widow who was buried by the parish.  They had the following known children:

    1. Elizabeth Hewenes was baptised on 4 April 1687 in Ashurst.

    2. Mary Newens was baptised on 22 April 1689 in Ashurst.

    3. Anne Newenes was baptised on 13 October 1691 in Ashurst.

    4. Sarah Euans was baptised on 2 February 1693/4 in Ashurst.

    5. Anne Euans was baptised on 17 December 1696 in Ashurst.  She may have been buried as Anne Ewens, daughter of Thomas from Claylands on 10 April 1720 in Ashurst.

    6. John Euans was baptised on 29 January 1703/4 in Ashurst, at which time his father was a husbandman.

As Thomas Uens he may have married for a second time to Mary Child on 17 July 1711 in Ashurst.

  2. George Evans and Elizabeth Bennett of Wiston married on 26 December 1689 in Storrington, Sussex.  They had the following known children:

    1. Samuel Yewens was baptised on 14 June 1696 in Wiston.

    3. Elizabeth Yewens was baptised on 23 September 1704 in Wiston.

  5. John Evans of Slinfold and Elizabeth Duke of Houghton married on 5 June 1714 in Bignor, Sussex.  They had the following known child:

    1. Anne Evines was baptised on 11 February 1728/9 in Coats cum Burton.

  6. Charles Yewans and Sarah Batchelor married on 24 July 1715 in Washington, Sussex.

  7. John Evans and Mary married before 1721.  They had the following known children:

    2. Esther Evans was born 5 April 1724 and baptised on 15 April 1724 in Henfield.  Esther married George Bud on 17 November 1744 in Henfield.  He was then of Lancing.

    3. Amy Evans was born and baptised on 7 August 1726 in Henfield.  She was buried on 11 May 1810 in Ashurst and the burial register recorded her name as Amy Lyncer.

Amy married William Lynsar by banns on 6 August 1752 in Ashurst.  They were both then of Ashurst.

William was baptised on 23 February 1727/8 in Ashurst and was the son of John Lynsar and Sarah Langford.
