William SCUTT
(c1825-1908)
and Mary MANSBRIDGE (c1834-?)

William Scutt
and
Mary Mansbridge married by banns on 18 November 1854 in Bolney, Sussex.
William was then a labourer and Mary a domestic servant, and they were both
of Bolney. The witnesses to the marriage were Maria Ede,
Henry Scutt and Thomas Attree. Their father's were named as
William Mansbridge and John Scutt who were both labourers.
(William and Mary were not my direct ancestors. Mary was the niece of
my 3x Great Grandmother,
Elizabeth
Mansbridge (1808-1879). I also have earlier Scutt ancestors
from Billingshurst and West Chiltington, but don't know, yet, if there is
any link.)
William
Scutt was born about 1824-6 in Bolney and was the son of
John
Scutt (c1775-1860) and Ann Stoner (1791-1868). He
died on 13 March and
was buried in Bolney on 28 March 1908. His cause of death was Cerebral
Apoplexy. When the
1841 census was recorded, William was possibly the 15 year old agricultural
labourer living in the home of Richard Cragg
at Brooklands in Bolney. Also in Richard's household at that time was
15 year old
Ann Mansbridge, a
servant. By 1851 William was living with his
parents at Scrapps House in Bolney and he was then a 27 year old unmarried
agricultural labourer.
William's brother
John Scutt (1829-1877) married
Mary's cousin
Kezia Mansbridge
(1835-?) in 1853.
Mary Mansbridge
was born about 1834/5 in Bolney.
She was the daughter of
William Mansbridge (1792-1874) and
Sarah Walder (1799-1878). In 1841 she was a 6 year old
living with her parents and siblings in Bolney. She was still with her
parents as a 16 year old in 1851.
At the time of the 1861 census the family were living in Colwood Road,
Bolney and William was then an engine driver and feeder. In 1871 they
were living at Homewood House and William was an agricultural labourer. When the 1881
census was recorded the family were living at Homewood House Cottages in Bolney and William was an
agricultural labourer - next door at that time was
the family of
James Vaughan. In 1901 the couple
were living at Colwood Park Farm, Bolney and William was an ordinary
labourer.
Another
Mary Mansbridge was also born in 1834 and married in 1854. She
was the daughter of
William Mansbridge (1794-1866) and
Sarah
Neeve (1799-?) and married
George Attree.
