Thomas SCUTT (1692-1773)

and Avis WOODS (1702-1773)

Thomas Scutt and Avis Woods were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 28 February 1719/20 in Wiggonholt, Sussex.  They were both then said to be of West Chiltington, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 18 February 1719/20 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which recorded that Avis was of West Chiltington.  Surety for the licence was provided by Thomas himself and Joseph Page of West Chiltington.

Thomas Scutt may have been baptised on 4 October 1692 in Pulborough, Sussex, the son of Thomas Scutt (1657-1718) and Avis Searle (c1665-1695).  He may have been buried on 23 January 1773 in Pulborough, Sussex.  There was another Thomas Scutt baptised on 6 January 1691/2 in West Chiltington, Sussex, the son of John Scutt and Joan Shaw.

Avis Woods was baptised on 28 February 1701/2 in West Tarring, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Woods and Elizabeth Maunt.  Avis may have been buried on 18 July 1773 in Pulborough, but the burial register only records her name and date of burial, so I can not be sure it refers to this Avis Scutt.

Thomas Scutt and Avis Woods had 4 or 5 known children:

  1. John Scutt was baptised on 3 April 1721 in West Chiltington.

  2. Jane Scutt was baptised on 26 May 1723 in West Chiltington.  Might she have been the mother of:

    1. Ann Peachey Scutt was baptised on 20 May 1759 in Pulborough.

    2. William Scutt was baptised on 11 October 1761 in Pulborough.

  3. John Scutt was baptised on 1 December 1724 in Pulborough.  He was the son of Thomas, but was he part of this family?

  4. Thomas Scutt, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 16 April 1726 in West Chiltington.  He married 5 146 Hannah Miriam in 1760.  (They have their own page.)

  5. William Scutt was baptised on 19 September 1727 in Pulborough.
