Thomas SCUTT (1657-1718)

and Avis SEARLE (c1665-1694)

and Jane WILSON (c1670-1710)

Thomas Scutt and Avis Searle may have been my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their possible place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 24 January 1685/6 in Wiggonholt, Sussex.  They were both then of Pulborough.  Thomas also married Jane Willson on 30 May 1694 in Pulborough, Sussex.

Thomas Scutt was baptised on 12 August 1657 in Pulborough.  He was the son of John Scutt.  He may have been buried on 2 October 1718 in Pulborough.

Avis Searle's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 26 January or February 1693/4 in Pulborough and the burial register recorded that she was Avice, wife of Thomas Scutt.  Might she have been baptised on 10 December 1661 in Lyminster, Sussex, the daughter of Nicholas Searle and Alice?

Jane Wilson's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been buried on 2 October 1710 in Pulborough, as Joan wife of Thomas Scutt.

Thomas Scutt and Avice Searle had 4 known children:

  1. John Scutt was baptised on 13 June 1686 in Pulborough and buried there on 16 July 1686.

  2. Mary Scutt was baptised on 21 November 1689 in Pulborough.

  3. Jane Scutt was baptised on 24 January 1690/1 in Pulborough.  She may have married Thomas Bottin on 23 April 1714 in Pulborough.  They were both then of Pulborough.

  4. Thomas Scutt, my possible 6x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 4 October 1692 in Pulborough.  He married Avis Woods in 1720.  (They have their own page.)

Thomas Scutt and Jane Wilson had 3 known children:

  1. John Scutt was baptised on 9 August 1696 in Pulborough.

  2. Robert Scutt was baptised on 13 May 1704 in Pulborough.

  3. Joan Scutt was baptised on 17 February 1707/8 in Pulborough.  A marriage licence was issued on 14 May 1727 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester for Joan Scutt of Pulborough and Thomas Edderton of Billingshurst.

I'm not sure if the following is connected in anyway, but a marriage licence was issued on 29 August 1732 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester in the names of Bowden Puttock and Avis Scutt.  They were both said to be of Arundel.  Surety for the licence was provided by Bowden himself and John Warning Camp.  The marriage took place on 29 August 1732 in Amberley, however, the bride's name was recorded as Alice Scutt.
