Robert SCUTT (1774-1838)

and Susannah BOXALL (c1772-1822)

Robert Scutt and Susannah Boxall married by banns on 25 March 1800 in Shipley, Sussex.  They both made their X marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Fivens and James Fillary.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Robert was the brother of my 4x Great Grandmother, Hannah Scutt.)

Robert Scutt was baptised on 5 June 1774 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  He was the son of  5 146 Thomas Scutt (1726-?) and 5 146 Hannah Miriam (1734-1817).  Robert died aged 64 years at Pulborough and was buried on 22 October 1838 in West Chiltington.

Susannah Boxall's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 50 years and was buried on 19 May 1822 in  West Chiltington.

Robert Scutt and Susannah Boxall had 6 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Scutt was baptised on 27 July 1800 in Billingshurst.

Elizabeth may have married James Parsons by banns on 20 October 1827 in Pulborough.  He was then of Billingshurst and she of Pulborough.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Lander and Charlotte Hayler.  The banns were published in Pulborough on 23 and 30 September and 7 October 1827.  James and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. Mary Ann Parsons was baptised on 23 January 1828 in West Chiltington and buried there on 2 March 1828.

    2. James Parsons was baptised on 12 July 1829 in West Chiltington.  In 1851 he may have been the 22 year old James Parsons lodging in the home of Christopher Potter Hole Street, Wiston, Sussex.  James then said he was born in Thakeham.

  2. George Scutt was baptised on 7 November 1802 in West Chiltington and buried there on 18 March 1803.

  3. Samuel Scutt was baptised on 10 June 1804 in Pulborough.

Samuel married Jane Hayler Scutt by banns on 12 September 1831 in Pulborough.  They were both then of Pulborough and the witnesses to their marriage were William Reeves and James Overington.  The banns were published in Pulborough on 28 August, 4 and 11 September 1831.

Jane Haylor Scutt was baptised on 24 May 1812 in Pulborough and was the daughter of Hannah Scutt.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living at Stall House, Pulborough, with Jane's mother and younger sister.  Sam was then said to have been a 35 year old farmer and Jane was 25.

In 1851 the couple and 7 children were living at Coneyhurst Farm in West Chiltington.  Robert was then a 47 year old farmer of 14 acres employing 3 labourers.  Jane's age was then recorded as 39.  Also with the family on census night was 18 year old house servant Emily Harwood.  The 1861 census records that Samuel was a 56 year old widower living at Coneyhurst where he was a farmer of 200 acres employing 4 men and 1 boy.  With him on census night were his 5 sons by his first marriage, his 24 year old housekeeper and their 4 children.

Samuel and Jane had the following children:

    1. Hannah Scutt was baptised on 22 January 1832 in Pulborough.  She died in 1902.  She was 9 years old in 1841.

Hannah married William Short on 5 February 1848 in West Chiltington.  The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel King and Charlotte King.

William was baptised on 23 December 1821 in Pulborough and was the son of Leonard Short (1804-1883) and Elizabeth Scutt (c1792-1867).

    2. Robert Scutt was baptised on 12 July 1835 in Pulborough.  He was 6 years old in 1841.  In 1851 he was a 16 year old farmer's son employed on his father's farm.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 25 year old farmer's son living with his father.

Robert married Ellen Willard on 19 October 1861 in Pulborough.  She was then a 21 year old spinster and he a 25 year old bachelor and labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Woolven and Jesse Greenfield.

    4. Susan Scutt was baptised on 4 October 1840 in Pulborough.  At the time of the 1841 census she was 9 months old.  The 1851 census records that she was 11 year old Susanna Scutt.
