John SCUTT (1829-1877)

and Kezia MANSBRIDGE (1835-?)

 

John Scutt and Kezia Mansbridge married on 30 July 1853 in Cowfold, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Scutt was baptised on 1 February 1829 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of John Scutt (c1775-1860) and Ann Stoner (1791-1868).  John died aged 49 years and was buried in Bolney on 29 September 1877.

Kezia Mansbridge was born on 6 February 1835 at Eastridge in Henfield and baptised on 8 March 1835 in Henfield.  She was the daughter of Thomas Mansbridge (1799-1873) and Eliza Anscombe (1815-?).  At the time of the 1901 census Kezia was a Charwoman living in Bolney.

Kezia's cousin, Mary Mansbridge (c1834-?) married John's elder brother William Scutt (c1825-1908) in 1854.

At the time of the 1871 census the couple and 3 sons were living in Bolney Street, Bolney.  John was then a 42 year old farm labourer and Kezia was 36.  Their neighbours either side were John's brother Philip Scutt and his wife Sarah Ann, and also 89 year old widower Sarah Batup who was most probably the grandmother of Philip's wife.

 

John Scutt and Kezia Mansbridge had 7 known children:

  1. William Andrew Scutt was baptised on 29 January 1854 in Cowfold and buried on 16 March 1856 in Bolney.

  2. Fanny Jane Scutt was baptised on 29 March 1857 in Bolney.  She married George Garman in 1876.  He was born about 1854 in Warnham, Sussex.

  3. James Alfred Scutt was baptised on 15 January 1860 in Bolney.  He was buried there on 26 October 1882.  He married Laura French on 20 September 1879 in Bolney.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was an inmate of the Cuckfield Union Workhouse and his name was then recorded as Alfred Scutt, a 21 year old Agricultural Labourer.  His wife and daughter were living at Brewers Cottage in Bolney along with 22 year old lodger William Eyler.  Laura was born about 1862 in Patcham, Sussex and may have been a daughter of James French (1828-?) and Harriet Mary Hayword (c1831-?).  (James and Harriet had a daughter Jane born in Patcham in 1860 and a son Herbert in 1864.)  James and Laura had 1 known daughter:

    1. Harriet Laura Scutt was baptised on 29 August 1880 in Bolney.  She may have married in the fourth quarter of 1903 in the Paddington registration district to either James Charles Baylis or Walter Edward Bull.

  4. Thomas John Scutt was baptised on 26 October 1862 in Bolney.  He died in about November 1905.  In 1871 he was an 8 year old scholar living with his parents.

  5. Leonard Scutt was baptised on 30 April 1865 in Bolney.  In 1871 he was a 6 year old scholar.  He married Alice Greening on 4 June 1887 in Bolney.  She was born about 1865 in Ditchling, Sussex.

  6. George Scutt was baptised on 26 April 1868 in Bolney.  He was 3 years old when the 1871 census was recorded.  He married Emma Mary Sumner in 1892.

  7. Louisa Scutt was baptised on 28 September 1873 in Bolney and died in 1885.
