Charles Scutt and Charlotte Carter married
by banns on 30 August 1834 in South Stoke, Sussex. They were both of
South Stoke. The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Baker
and Harriet Baker. (They were not my
direct ancestors.)
Charles Scutt was baptised on 26 July 1812 in Bignor,
Sussex. He was the son of Thomas Scutt (c1777-1852)
and Sarah Greenfield (c1783-1855).
Charles died aged 75 years and was buried on 29 December 1887 in Bignor.
Charlotte Carter's dated and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. She died aged 48 years and was buried on 26 July 1863
in Bignor.
When the 1841 census was recorded Charlotte was said to be 25 years old, of
independent means and not born in Sussex. She was living in Bignor
along with 3 children. Charles was not at home on census night.
In 1851 the couple were living in Bignor village along with their 7
children. Charles was then a 40 year old farm labourer and Charlotte
was 36. He gave his place as Bignor and she as Corsham, Wiltshire.
The 1861 census records the couple and 7 children were living in Bignor
village. Charles was a 51 year old agricultural labourer and Charlotte
was 45.
In 1871, Charles was a 59 year old widower and living in Bignor along with
his 2 youngest children.

and Charlotte Carter had 10 known children:

George Scutt was baptised on 15 February 1835 in South
Stoke. The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer
from Offham. He was 6 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 17
year old ploughboy.

James Scutt was baptised on 16 April 1837 in Sutton,
Sussex. The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.
James died aged 34 years and was buried on 18 July 1871 in Bignor.
He was 4 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 14 year old
ploughboy. In 1861 he was an unmarried 24 year old agricultural
labourer and living at home with his parents.

Sarah Scutt was baptised on 29 September 1839 Sutton.
The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer. She was
2 years old in 1841. In 1851 she was a 12 year old scholar.

William Scutt was baptised on 3 April 1842 in Bignor.
The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer. He died
aged 50 years and was buried on 10 January 1892 in Bignor. At the
time of the 1851 census he was a 9 year old scholar. In 1861 he
was a 19 year old agricultural labourer.

Charles Scutt was baptised on 9
June 1844 in Bignor. The baptism register noted that his father
was a labourer. He died aged 33 years and his death was registered
in 1877 in the Steyning registration district. The 1851 census
recorded that he was 7 year old Frederick Scutt and he
was a scholar.

on 30 April 1871 in Hove, Sussex.

Francis Scutt was baptised on 6 December 1846 in Bignor.
The baptism register noted that his father was a day labourer. The
1851 census recorded that he was a 5 year old scholar. In 1861,
Frank Scutt was a 15 year old agricultural labourer.

Maria Scutt was baptised on 20 May 1849 in Bignor.
The baptism register noted that her father was a day labourer. At
the time of the 1851 census she was 2 years old. She was a 12 year
old scholar in 1861.

Mary Ann Scutt was baptised on 12 September 1852 in
Bignor. The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.
In 1861 she was a 9 year old scholar.

Alfred Scutt was baptised on 11 November 1855 in Bignor.
The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer. He was
a 6 year old scholar in 1861. In 1871 he was a 15 year old
agricultural labourer.

Avice Scutt was baptised on 2 May 1858 in Bignor.
The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer. When
the 1861 census was recorded she was 3 years old. In 1871 she was
a 13 year scholar.
