Charles SCUTT (1812-1887)

and Charlotte CARTER (c1815-1863)

Charles Scutt and Charlotte Carter married by banns on 30 August 1834 in South Stoke, Sussex.  They were both of South Stoke.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Baker and Harriet Baker.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Charles Scutt was baptised on 26 July 1812 in Bignor, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Scutt (c1777-1852) and Sarah Greenfield (c1783-1855).  Charles died aged 75 years and was buried on 29 December 1887 in Bignor.

Charlotte Carter's dated and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 48 years and was buried on 26 July 1863 in Bignor.

When the 1841 census was recorded Charlotte was said to be 25 years old, of independent means and not born in Sussex.  She was living in Bignor along with 3 children.  Charles was not at home on census night.

In 1851 the couple were living in Bignor village along with their 7 children.  Charles was then a 40 year old farm labourer and Charlotte was 36.  He gave his place as Bignor and she as Corsham, Wiltshire.

The 1861 census records the couple and 7 children were living in Bignor village.  Charles was a 51 year old agricultural labourer and Charlotte was 45.

In 1871, Charles was a 59 year old widower and living in Bignor along with his 2 youngest children.
