Thomas SAYERS
(1655-1713)

In the Name of God Amen I
THOMAS SAYRES the Elder of WEST CHILTINGTON in the County of
SUSSEX yeoman being indifferent health of body at this p[re]sent time & of
sound & perfect mind & memory thanks be [to] Almighty God for the same yet
considering the certainty of death & the uncertainty of the time when I doe
here make & ordaine this my last Will & Testament in manner & forme
following First I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God trusting
in & through the merits of Jesus Christ my only Saviour & Redeemer & my body
to the Earth to be buried in Christian buriall And as for my Temporall
Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to blesse me with I doe here dispose
thereof as followeth Item I give & bequeath to my son EDWARD
SAYRES One Shilling I doe here give him noe more because I have
allready set him into a Farme & stock it for him Item I give & bequeath to
my son EDMUND SAYRES One Shilling I give him noe more here
in my will because I have given him a Hundred pounds allready Item I give &
bequeath to my son JOHN SAYRES One Shilling and I give him
noe more because I have admitted him allready into a Copyhold after me Item
I give & bequeath to my son THOMAS SAYRES the full sum of
One Hundred pounds to be paid to him in lawfull money of Great Britain
within Twelve months after my decease Item I give & bequeath to my Daughter
ANN SAYRES the full sum[me] of One Hundred pounds to be
paid to her in lawfull money of Great Britain within Twelve months after my
decease And if any of these Two Children THOMAS &
ANNE shall happen to dye before their legacies is paid That then I
doe here will that the Legacies of him or her soe dyeing to be paid between
my son EDMUND SAYRES & the other of them two be it
THOMAS or ANNE that shall be living equally Item I
doe hereby give & bequeath to my Seven children that I have by MARY
my now wife the full sum of Three Hundred & Fifty pounds of lawfull money of
Great Britain to be paid equally amongst them in manner & forme following
That is to say I doe here will that my Executrix doe pay to my son
HENRYSAYRES the full sum[me] of Fifty pounds part thereof as soon
as he shall come to be of the age of One & Twenty years ItemI doe here will
that my Executrix pay to my daughter MARY SAYRES the full
sum[me] of Fifty pounds part thereof as soon as she shall come to be of the
full age of One & Twenty yeares Item I here will that My Executrix pay to my
Daughter ELIZABETH SAYRES the full sum[me] of Fifty pounds
part thereof as soon as she .shall come to be of the full age of One &
Twenty yeares Item I give & will that my Executrix pay to my Daughter
HANNAH SAYRES the like sum[me] of Fifty pounds part thereof
as soon as she shall come to be of the age of One & Twenty years Item I will
that my Executrix pay to my son RICHARD SAYRES the sum of
Fifty pounds part thereof as soon as he shall come to be of the full age of
One & Twenty years Item I will that my Executrix pay to my son
ROBERT SAYRES the sum[me] of Fifty pounds part thereof as soon as
he shall come to be of the full age of One & Twenty years Item I will that
my Executrix pay to my son MAURICE SAYRES the sum[me] of
Fifty pounds part thereof as he shall come to be of the age of One & Twenty
years And I doe here will that if any of these Seven children shall happen
to dye before they come to eb of the full age of One & Twenty years that
then the Legacie or legacies of them dyeing .under age to be paid to the
rest of the seven that shall be living & to be equally divided amongst
them. And I doe here assigne & appoint MARY my dear &
loving wife in trust over them & to her I doe here comit the care & tuition
of them Children I have by her to look after them & to find & provide for
them meat drink apparell & schooling that is to bring them up in such means
as my stock will afford till they can shift & provide for themselves my
meaning is to the age of One & Twenty if not capable afore & then to pay
them their Legacies here given them without any allowance s deductions or
abatement to be kept back for meat Drink or Apparell of Schoolling I will
that my Executrix after my death call in money speedily to pay my Son
THOMAS & my Daughter ANNE their Legacies
at the time aforement[i]oned in my Will unless they think fitt to lett it
lie & take interest for it And I doe here make & constitute & appoint
MARY my dear & loving wife whole & sole Executrix of this
my last Will & Testament To whom after my Debts & Legacies & Funerall
expenses w[i]th the Probat of this my Will is satisfyed & paid I doe here
give to my said Executrix all monies due & owing to me at my decease be it
upon Mortgage Bond Bill Book or otherwise howsoever & also all my goods &
Chattells & p[er]sonall Estate w[ha]tsoever And I doe here revoke & make
void & null all former Wills by me heretofore at any time made or declared
In Witness whereof I THOMAS SAYRES th’elder have here unto
this my last Will & Testament set my hand & seal this Fifteenth Day of
SEPTEMBER in the Eleventh year of the reigne of our sov[er]aigne Lady ANNE
by the Grace of God of Great Britain France & Ireland Queen Defender of the
Faith annoq D[omi]ni 1712 THOMAS SAYRES Signed Sealed
Declared & published by the said THOMAS SAYRES the elder as
the last Will & Testament in the p[re]sence of us who did all of us
subscribe our names as Witnesses in the p[re]sence of the said Testator
