Thomas SAYERS (1655-1713)

and Susan JUPP (1652-1693)

and Mary JAYS (?-?)

Thomas Sayers and Susan Jupp may have been my 8x Great Grandparents  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married sometime before or about 1681.  Thomas married for a second time to Mary Jayes on 28 July 1698 in West Chiltington, Sussex.

Thomas Sayers was baptised on 30 August 1655 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was the son of Edmund Sayers (1624-1702) and Agnes Pannett (c1630-1660).  Thomas was buried on 23 August 1713 in West Chiltington.  He left a will dated 15 September 1712, which was proved on 23 October 1713 by his widow.

Susan Jupp was baptised on 19 April 1652 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Jupp.  Susan was buried on 13 June 1693 in West Chiltington.

Mary Jays date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was appointed the sole executrix of her husband's will.  Might she have been baptised on 20 February 1669/70 in Billingshurst and have been the daughter of John Jayes?

Thomas Sayers and Susan Jupp had 5 known children:

  1. Edward Sayers, may have been my 7x Great Grandfather.  He was baptised on 17 September 1682 in Pulborough.  He married Susan Bennett in 1717.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Thomas Sayers was baptised on 3 July 1684 in Pulborough.  Might he have been buried on 16 March 1742/3 in Pulborough?  He was mentioned in his grandfather's will.  By his father's will, he was left a legacy of 100.  He was mentioned in the 1713 will of his "cousin", Edmund Sayers, who mentioned that Thomas was then living with Edmund.

Thomas married Susan Hailer on 14 July 1715 in Itchingfield.  They were both then of Pulborough.  (Another Susan Haylor, of Chiltington, married John Dean on 26 June 1715 in Itchingfield.)

Might she have been baptised on 24 August 1685 in Wisborough Green, as Susan Haylor, the daughter of John Haylor and Mary?  Was she buried on 11 July 1758 in Pulborough, as Susan Saires, widow?

Thomas and Susan had the following children:

    1. Edmund Sayers was baptised on 15 September 1715 in Pulborough.

    2. Thomas Sayers was baptised on 6 February 1716/7 in Pulborough.

    3. John Sayers was baptised on 6 November 1718 in Pulborough.  Did he or the John Sayers born in 1715 or 1719 marry Ann Holt in 1744?  Or maybe Mary Knight by banns on 10 May 1751 in Billingshurst.  Or Sarah Elliot by licence on 26 June 1753 in Burton cum Coates, Sussex.  The marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which recorded that John was a bachelor of Pulborough and Sarah spinster of Wisborough Green.  Surety for the licence was provided by John himself and Arthur Strudwick.

    4. Edward Saires was baptised on 17 November 1720 in Pulborough.

    5. Ann Saires was baptised on 8 November 1722 in Pulborough.

  3. Edmund Sayers was baptised on 20 May 1686 in Pulborough.  He was mentioned in his grandfather's will and that of his father, by which he received a legacy of just 1 shilling because his father had already given in 100.

  4. John Sayers was baptised on 18 July 1688 in Pulborough.  He was mentioned in his grandfather's will.  He was also mentioned in his father's will, by which he also received a legacy of just 1 shilling because John had already been admitted to his father's copyhold land.  Did he marry Mary Terry by licence on 28 April 1731 at St. Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which recorded that John was a bachelor and yeoman of Pulborough, whilst Mary was a widow of the same place.  Surety for the licence was provided by John himself and Hugh Slater a yeoman of West Chiltington.  Or perhaps he married Ann Humphry on 30 August 1726 in Chichester?

  5. Ann Sayers was baptised on 14 May 1690 in West Chiltington.  She was mentioned in her grandfather's will.  By her father's will she was left a legacy of 100.

Ann married John Harwood on 23 June 1715 in West Chiltington.
