Joseph SAYERS (1769-?)

and Leah LELLIOTT (1788-?)

 

Joseph Sayers and Leah Lelliott married on 27 May 1810 in Washington, Sussex.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor from Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Leah was the niece of my 4x Great Grandmother.)

Joseph Sayers may have been baptised on 12 April 1769 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, and have been the son of William Sayers.

Leah Liliot was baptised on 26 October 1788 in Wiston, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Elizabeth Liliot (1771-?).

The 1841 census recorded that Joseph was a 70 year old agricultural labourer and Lear was 55.  They were living in School Row, Hurstpierpoint, along with 5 children.

In 1851, Lear Sayers was a 65 year old widow and charwoman living at at School Row 2, Hurstpierpoint along with 3 of her sons.  She gave her place of birth as Wiston.

When the 1861 census was recorded Leah was a 74 year old widow, living at 2 School Row in Hurstpierpoint, along with 3 of her children.  Lead then gave her place of birth as Wiston.

 

Joseph Sayers and Leah Lelliott had 7 known children:

  1. William Sayers was baptised on 16 August 1810 in Hurstpierpoint.  In 1841 he was a 30 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was an unmarried 40 year old farm labourer, living with his mother.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 50 year old farm labourer and living with his mother.

  2. Joseph Sayers was baptised on 30 March 1817 in Hurstpierpoint.  He was a 20 year old agricultural labourer in 1841 and living at home.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was an unmarried 30 year old farm labourer, living with his mother.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 43 year old farm labourer and living with his mother.

  3. Elizabeth Sayers was baptised on 18 September 1819 in Hurstpierpoint.  Did she marry Richard Stevens on 24 April 1837 in Hurstpierpoint?

  4. George Sayers was baptised on 9 December 1821 in Hurstpierpoint.

  5. Emma Sayers was baptised on 14 March 1824 in Hurstpierpoint.  The 1841 census recorded that she was 15 years old.

  6. Peter Sayers was baptised on 7 May 1826 in Hurstpierpoint.  He was 12 years old in 1841.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was an unmarried 20 year old farm labourer, living with his mother.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 25 year old farm labourer and living with his mother.

  7. Louisa Sayers was baptised on 13 July 1828 in Hurstpierpoint.  The 1841 census recorded that she was 9 years old.
