John SAYERS (1719-?)

and Anne HOLT (c1720-?)

Sketch of St. Mary's by Richard Nevin, taken from http://www.wisgreen.freeserve.co.uk/churchsketch/pulborough.htmlJohn Sayers and Anne Holt were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 10 April 1744 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Pulborough, Sussex.

John Sayers may have been baptised on 2 January 1719/20 in Parham, Sussex, the son of Edward Sayers (1682-1723) and Susan Hammond (1685-1733).  However, he did have a cousin John Sayers baptised in Pulborough on 6 November 1718, the son of Thomas Sayers (1684-?) and Susan Hailor (1685-?).  And, there was also a John Sayers baptised on 14 November 1715 in Pulborough, the son of Philip Sayers and Susanna Newman.

Might he/they have been buried in Pulborough on 29 December 1774 or 21 January 1778 or 25 November 1779 or 18 March 1785?  A headstone in Pulborough churchyard records that a John Sayres died age 64 yeas on 6 November 1779, therefore, born about 1715.

John son of Edward and Susan, inherited Birds als Clayyard in West Chiltington.

Ann Holtís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been buried in Pulborough on 22 June 1771 or 8 June 1784 or 18 November 1784 or 8 April 1800 or 2 April 1804?

Another John Sayers married Ann Humphry in 1726 and they had children baptised in Pulborough between 1727 and 1745.

John Sayers and Ann Holt may have had 5 daughters:

  1. Susannah Sayers, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 14 May 1745 in Pulborough.  She married 5 74 Richard Mills in 1774.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Anne Sayers was baptised on 19 November 1746 in Pulborough.  She died aged 24 years on 19 June 1770 and was buried with her sister Jane in Pulborough

  3. Mary Sayers was baptised on 19 July 1748 in Pulborough.  A Mary Saires was buried on 16 November 1762 and another on 18 April 1764, both in Pulborough.  Unfortunately the burial register only recorded the name in both occurances.  Yet another Mary Sayers was buried in Pulborough on 10 May 1797.

  4. Jane Sayers was baptised on 27 September 1750 in West Chiltington.  She died aged 20 years on 24 September 1770 and was buried with her sister Ann in Pulborough.

  5. Sarah Sayers was baptised on 8 February 1753 in West Chiltington.  Sarah may have married George Sayres by licence on 20 February 1781 in Pulborough.  The witnesses to their marriage were Mary Sayres and Thomas Lucas.  Their marriage licence was issued on 19 February 1781 by the Archdeaconary of Chichester, which recorded that she was a 26 year old spinster of Pulborough, whilst he was a 28 year old bachelor and butcher of Chichester.  Surety for the licence was provided by George himself and James Sayres a cabinetmaker of Chichester.

A Mary Holt married Richard Duffil on 5 June 1715 in Thakeham, Sussex.  Might Mary have been related to Ann?  Mary may have been baptised on 29 August 1684 in Thakeham and have been the daughter of John Hoult and Joan Skinner who had married on 1 September 1682 in Thakeham.  John may have married again to Margaret Tribe on 30 April 1689 in West Chiltington.

A James Holt married Mary Greenfield by licence on 7 October 1733 in Wiggonholt, Sussex.  He was then of Ockley, Surrey and she of Billingshurst, Sussex.
