Edward SAYERS (1682-1723)
and Susan
HAMMOND
(1685-1733)

Edward Sayers
and
Susan Hammond
may have been my 7x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to
see their possible place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 9 July 1717 in Itchingfield, Sussex. Edward was then of (West) Chiltington
and Susan Beniots, widow was of Pulborough.
Susan had previously married Thomas Bennet by licence on 15
May 1705 in Boxgrove, Sussex. Their marriage licence was issued the
day before by the Archdeaconry of Chichester and noted that Susan
Hamond was a spinster of West Chiltington and Thomas
Bennett a husbandman of Pulborough. As Susannah
Sayres she married again to Thomas Elliot on 31
May 1726 in West Chiltington.
Edward Sayers
was baptised on 17 September 1682 in Pulborough, Sussex. He was the
son of Thomas Sayers (1655-1713) and
Susan Jupp (1652-1693).
He may have died in 1723 in Parham, Sussex as in that year letters of
administration were grant in respect of Edward Sayers.
Edward was mentioned in his father's will, by which he was left a legacy of
just 1 shilling, as his father had already set him up with a farm and stock.
It would seem Edward was mention in the will of
Edmund Sayers
(1656-1713) as his cousin. Edward and his brother Thomas
were appointed trustees of Edmund's will and were also requested to care for
Edmund's children.
Susan Hammond
was baptised on 24 January 1684/5 in West Chiltington, Sussex. She was
the daughter of Thomas Hammond.
and Susan. She was mentioned in her mother's will as
Susan wife of Thomas Eliot of Parham.
Her mother left her one shilling and her wedding ring. She was living in
Parham, Sussex when she made her will in 1733, which was proved on 24
January 1737/8. Susan witnessed the 1713 will of
William Sayers.
Thomas Bennett was baptised on 20 December 1672 in
Pulborough and was the son of William Bennett (?-1701) and
Elizabeth Godsmarke, nee Farley. He was
buried on 8 July 1710 in Pulborough. He left a will in which he
mentioned his daughter Susan and "my children", and he appointed his wife as
executrix. He also mentioned his brother-in-law,
Edmund Sayers
(1656-1713) who had married his sister
Elizabeth Bennett
in 1694.
Thomas Bennett and Susan Hammond had 3 known children:
-
Susan Bennet was baptised on 6 March 1706/7 in
Pulborough. She was left a legacy of £100 by her father, to be
paid to her when she reached 21 years of age or on her day of marriage.
Susan married Robert Harmes by licence on 20 November
1730 in Parham. Their marriage licence was issued on 24 October
1730 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester. It recorded that Susan was
a spinster of Parham and Robert a bachelor and yeoman of Amberley.
-
Anne Bennet was baptised on 22 January 1707/8 in
Pulborough. She may have died young as she was not mentioned in
her mother's will.
-
Thomas Bennett was baptised on 29 September 1710 in
Pulborough.
Edward Sayers and Susan
Bennett, nee Hammond
had 1 known child:
-
John Sayers,
my 6x Great Grandfather,
was baptised on 2 January 1719/20 in Parham, Sussex. He married
Ann Holt in
1744. (They have their own page.)
Thomas
Elliott and Susan Sayers, formerly Bennett, nee Hammond had 1 known child:
-
Edward Elliott was mentioned in his mother's will, by
which he was to receive £200 from the estate of his late father.
