Walter SAWYERS (1726-1780)

and Mary THORPE (1734-?)

Walter Sayers and Mary Thorpe were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 28 May 1751 at the parish church of St. Bartholomew in Maresfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Maresfield.

Walter Sawyers was baptised on 12 April 1726 in Fletching, Sussex.  He was the son of Walter Sawyers (1691-1732) and Catherine (c1700-1765).  He was buried on 19 August 1780 in Maresfield.

Mary Thorpe was baptised on 29 September 1734 in Maresfield.  She was the daughter of Thomas Thorpe (1711-1794) and Elizabeth Duffield (1707-1793).

Please note - sometimes their surname was recorded as Sayers, but I think Sawyers was the more usual way this family spelt their surname.

Walter Sawyers and Mary Thorpe had 11 known children:

  1. William Sawyers was baptised on 29 September 1751 in Maresfield.

William may have married twice.  Firstly to Susanna in about 1782 and then to Susanna Allen on 10 January 1787 in Maresfield.  From his first marriage there was 1 known son:

    1. William Sawyers was born on 24 January and baptised on 19 February 1782 in Lewes.

From the second marriage there were 2 known daughters:

    1. Elizabeth Sawyers was baptised on 5 August 1787 in Maresfield.

    2. Ann Sawyers was baptised on 18 October 1795 in Maresfield.

  2. Walter Sawyers, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 18 November 1753 in Maresfield.  He married 5 149 Ann Wright in 1781.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Mary Sayers was baptised on 1 February 1756 in Maresfield.

  4. Thomas Sayers was baptised on 9 July 1758 in Maresfield.

Thomas married Mary before or about 1785, and they had 5 known children:

    1. Elizabeth Sawyers was baptised on 12 June 1785 in Fletching.  An Elizabeth Sawyers was buried on 13 August 1789 in Fletching, but the burial register give no further identifying information.

    2. Thomas Sawyers was baptised on 22 April 1787 in Fletching.  A Thomas Sawyers was buried on 28 June 1792 in Fletching, and again no further identifying information was included in the burial register, so the burial may have been of the father or son.

    3. John Sawyers was baptised on 14 June 1789 in Fletching.

    4. Mary Sawyers was baptised on 22 May 1790 in Fletching and probably died as an infant.

    5. Mary Sawyers was baptised on 11 December 1791 in Fletching.

  5. Anne Sayers was baptised on 30 November 1760 in Maresfield and buried there on 10 February 1761.

  6. John Sayers was baptised on 27 June 1762 in Maresfield.

  7. Sarah Sayers was baptised on 10 August 1766 in Maresfield.

  8. Elizabeth Sayers was baptised on 13 August 1769 in Maresfield.

  9. Edward Sawyers was baptised on 9 August 1772 in Maresfield and buried there on 25 November 1772, as Edward Sayers.

  10. Ann Sayers was baptised on 19 September 1773 in Maresfield.

  11. Martha Sayers was baptised on 6 August 1775 in Maresfield and buried there on 12 October 1775.
