Walter SAWYERS (1691-1732)

and Catherine (c1700-1765)

Walter Sawyers and Catherine were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married in about 1725, possibly in or near Fletching, Sussex.  I have checked the Sussex Family History Groupís marriage index and could not find their marriage.  After Walterís death, as Kathern Sawyers she married William Cotenton of Maresfield on 11 April 1733 in Fletching.

Walter Sawyers was baptised on 21 May 1691 in Lindfield, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward Sa(w)yers (c1645-1711) and Mary Scrace.  He was buried in woollen on 5 April 1732 in Fletching.  Walter was mentioned in the will of his uncle Walter Sayers who died in 1728, as the son of Edward Sayers.  His uncle left him Spratts in Fletching which comprised of about 10 acres.

Catherineís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me, although she was possibly between about 1695 and 1710.  She was buried on 22 November 1765 in Maresfield by the name of Catharine Cottington, widow.

William Cottington was baptised on 11 June 1709 in Maresfield, Sussex.  He was the son of William Cottington and Ann Bryant.  He died before 1765.

Walter Sawyers and Catherine had 3 known children:

  1. Walter Sawyers, my 6x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 12 April 1726 in Fletching.  He married Mary Thorpe on 28 May 1751 in Maresfield.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Mary Sayer was baptised on 27 December 1728 in Fletching.

  3. William Sayers was baptised on 3 February 1730/1 in Fletching.  He may have been buried on 12 April 1787 in Maresfield.

William married Sarah Roper on 16 April 1759 in Isfield, Sussex.

Sarah was baptised on 27 August 1738 in Isfield and was the daughter of William Roper and Elizabeth Burchfield.  She may have been buried on 19 August 1784 in Maresfield.

William and Sarah had 9 known children:

    1. Sarah Sayers was baptised on 20 April 1760 in Maresfield.

    2. Mary Sayers was baptised on 13 September 1761 in Fletching.

    3. Sarah Sayers was baptised on 18 September 1763 in Fletching.

    4. Samuel Sawyer was baptised on 19 May 1766 in Fletching.

    5. Richard Sawyers was baptised on 19 March 1769 in Fletching.

    6. Ann Sawyers was baptised on 12 May 1771 in Fletching and buried there as an infant on 26 July 1771.  The burial register recorded her surname as Sayers.

    7. Philadelphia Sawyer was baptised on 21 January 1776 in Fletching.  The baptism register recorded that she was a twin, but the name of her twin was not recorded.

    8. Lucy Sawyer was baptised on 15 June 1777 in Fletching.

    9. Susanna Sawyers was baptised on 28 November 1779 in Maresfield.

William Cottington and Catherine had 3 known children:

  1. Henry Cottington was baptised on 6 June 1736 in Maresfield.  Henry may have married Lucy Relfe on 13 April 1760 in Uckfield.  He was then said to be of Maresfield.

  2. John Cottington was baptised on 24 December 1738 in Fletching.

  3. Katherine Cottington was baptised on 27 September 1742 in Maresfield.  She married John Pelling on 23 April 1761 in Maresfield.

Did William and Catherine also have a son named James Cottington who was born about 1740 and died in1826 in Framfield?  Or might he have been the son of John Cottington and Jane Horner who had married on 5 October 1725 in Maresfield?  Or the son of Edward Cottington and Susanna Burt who also married in Maresfield, on 8 October 1719.  Or, might he have been the son of John Cottingham and Mary Aldrege who married on 11 October 1741 in Wivelsfield and then settled in Framfield where their first known child was baptised in 1742?

James may have married Martha Wood on 21 June 1768 in Framfield and then Elizabeth Wakelin on 3 January 1771, also in Framfield.

Notes

There were four Katherinesí baptised in Fletching between 1700-1712:

  1. Katherine Pierce was baptised on 2 June 1700 and was the daughter of Stephen Pierce and Jane Turner.  She may have married Benjamin Maskall on 29 September 1724 in Lindfield, Sussex.  A Katherine Peirce had married John Pullen on 7 July 1723 in Hailsham, Sussex, but I believe she may have been baptised on 2 March 1693 in Jevington, the daughter of John Pierce and Ann Edmonds.  The parishes of Jevington and Hailsham border one another, whereas Fletching is a fair distance from Hailsham.

  2. Katherine Nutt was baptised on 14 October 1702 and was the daughter of Mr. John Nutt and Philadelphia Wilson of Maresfield.

  3. Katherine Homewood was baptised on 28 July 1705 and was the daughter of John Homewood and Mary Snatt.  She married Edward Collins of Lingfield on 1 May 1726 in Maresfield.

  4. Katherine Tooth was baptised on 25 March 1712 and was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Tooth.

Many thanks to Nigel Sawyer for identifying Walter's baptism - thank you Nigel.
