Richard SAWER (c1530-1571)

and Christian (c1540-?)

Richard Sayer and Christian may have been my 11x Great Grandparents.

Richard Sayer was buried on 18 November 1571 in Lindfield, Sussex.  Might his mother have been Elinre Sayer, vidua (widow) who was buried on 20 February 1564/5 in Lindfield?  And might his father have been William Sayer?  On 23 December 1520, John Chaloner of Lindfield left a will by which he gave a 20 shilling legacy to John Sayer son of William Sayer, when he reached the age of 23.

Christian Sayer married as a widow to John Pike on 13 October 1572 in Lindfield.  Jo Pke was buried on 24 June 1575 in Lindfield.  As Christine Pke she married Thomas Joye on 4 June 1576 in Lindfield.

Richard Sawyer and Christian may have had the following children:

  1. Johan Sayer was baptised on 27 January 1559/60 in Lindfield and buried there the next day.

  2. Elizabeth Sayer was baptised on 27 January 1559/60 in Lindfield and buried there the next day.

  3. Marye Sayer was baptised on 23 April 1561 in Lindfield.  She married Robert Muswell on 19 September 1587 in Lindfield.

  4. Agnys Sayer was baptised on 8 March 1562/3 in Lindfield.

  5. Marget Sayer was baptised on 11 February 1564/5 in Lindfield.

  6. William Sayer may have been part of this family, and my 10x Great Grandfather.  There is a gap in the Lindfield baptism register between 1566-1579.  William married twice, firstly to Alse Hesman in 1595 and then to Ann Skriven in 1599.  (They have their own page.)

  7. John Sayer may have been part of this family.  He may have been buried on 3 February 1637/8 in Lindfield.

    John had the following children:

    1. An infant was buried on 8 May 1616 in Lindfield.

    2. Jone Sayer was buried on 18 March 1627 in Lindfield.

Thomas Joye and Christian may have had the following children:

  1. Ann Joye married John Tergles on 12 May 1594 in Lindfield.

  2. Christine Joye married George Picknoll on 11 November 1599 in Lindfield.

  3. Elizabeth Joye married Henry Upton on 29 September 1607 in Lindfield.

  4. Thomas Joye married Agnes Hardynge on 1 February 1607/8 in Lindfield.

I am very grateful to Nigel Sawyer for providing the information to enable me to type up this page - thank you Nigel.
