Thomas ROLF (1769-1859)

and Barbara LILLYOTT (1770-1858)

Thomas Ralf and Barbara Lillet married on 24 October 1789 in Patcham, Sussex.  They were both then of Patcham.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Lee and John Lillet.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Barbara was the niece of 5x Great Grandfather, Samuel Lillyott.  Thomas and Barbara were also the 4x Great Grandparents of my cousins.)

Thomas Ruffe was baptised on 15 October 1769 in Rottingdean, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Ruffe and Maria.  The death of Thomas Rolf was registered in the first quarter of 1859 in the Steyning registration district.

Barbara Lillyott was baptised on 6 February 1770 in Woodmancote, Sussex and admitted to the Church on 18 February 1770.  She was the daughter of John Lillyot (c1737-?) and Ann Thorpe (c1740-?).  The death of Barbara Rolf was registered in the first quarter of 1858 in the Steyning registration district.

When the 1841 census was recorded, Barbara and Thomas Rolf were living at Clifton Farm in Hove, Sussex and Thomas was a farmer.  Also with them on census night were their daughter Barbara, 7 year old Maria Simmons and James Lillet aged 73.

In 1851 the couple were living alone at 4 Providence Place in Hove, they were both then 81 years old and Thomas was a retired farmer.  He then gave his place of birth as Rottingdean.

Thomas Rolf and Barbara Lillyot had 6 known children and possibly more:

1. Sarah Rolff may have been part of this family.  She was born about 1794.

   Sarah married Jasper Still by banns on 19 October 1816 in Hove.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Hove.

   When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 2 children were living in Portslade village and Jasper was a 45 year old agricultural labourer.  Sarah was then 47 years old.

   In 1851, Jasper and his son Ezekiel were living in Portslade.  Jasper was then 55 years old and gave his place of birth as Bolney, Sussex.

   Jasper and Sarah had the following children:

   1. Richard Still was baptised on 16 April 1820 in Portslade.

   2. Walter Still was baptised on 13 April 1823 in Portslade.

   3. Mary Still was baptised on 18 February 1825 in Portslade.  She was 17 year old in 1841 and living with her parents.

   4. Ezekiel Still was baptised on 29 July 1827 in Portslade.  In 1841 he was a 14 year old agricultural labourer living at home.  He was an unmarried 22 year old gardener in 1851.

2. John Roffe was baptised on 10 December 1797 in Patcham.

3. William Roffe was baptised on 10 December 1797 in Patcham.

4. Richard Rolf was born about 1801 in Patcham.

   Richard married Ann Hibbins on 21 June 1823 in Brighton, Sussex.

   Richard and Ann had the following children:

   1. Louisa Rolf was baptised on 23 January 1825 in Brighton.

   2. Barbara Rolf was baptised on 5 February 1826 in Brighton.

5. Barbara Rolf was born about 1803 in Patcham.

   As Barbara Rolf she married Job King on 3 June 1835 in Brighton.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.  When the 1841 census was recorded, 37 year old Barbara was living with her parents in Hove.

6. Lueza Roff (Lousia) was baptised on 9 March 1806 in Patcham.

7. Eliza Rolf was baptised on 3 July 1808 in Hove.  She married Thomas Pumphrey in 1834. (They have their own page.)

8. Caroline Rooff was baptised on 6 May 1810 in Hove.  She died aged 73 years and her death was registered as Caroline Simmons in the second quarter of 1883 in the Brighton registration district.

   As Caroline Rolf she married George Simmons by banns on 20 April 1833 in Brighton.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

   George was born about 1811 in Portslade, Sussex and was the son of Henry Simmons and Amelia.

   In 1841 the couple and their 2 young daughters were living in Adelaide Crescent, Hove.  George was then a gardener.

   When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and their 2 daughters (Maria and Emma) were living at 13 Adelaide Crescent in Hove.  George and Caroline were both said to be 40 years old and he was a gardener.  He gave his place of birth as Portslade and she as Hove.

   In 1881 the couple were living at 22 Temple Street, Brighton.  George was a 69 year old gardener and Caroline was 70.  Also sharing the property was the family of George Horsecroft.

   George and Caroline had the following known children:

   1. Maria Simmons was born about 1834 in Hove.  In 1841 she was 7 years old and living with her maternal grandparents.  In 1851 she was a 17 year old upholsteress.

      Maria married John Pannett.

      John was born about 1829 in Brighton and was the son of John Pannett and Mary Short.

      John and Maria had the following children:

      1. Emily Mary Pannett

      2. Amelia Pannett

      3. George Simmons Pannett

      4. Charles Edward Pannett

      5. Frederick William Pannett

      6. John Robert Pannett

      7. Emma Caroline Pannett

   2. Emma Simmons was born about 1835 in Hove.  In 1841 she was 6 years old.  She was 16 years old in 1851.

   3. Ann Simmons was born about 1838.  In 1841 she was 3 years old.
