The ROBINSON
Families of Sussex

I have no known Robinson ancestors, however, my Mum's younger sister,
Barbara Olive
Tullett married
Norman Robinson
in 1953. He was born in 1924 in Eastbourne, Sussex and is the son of
Norman Robinson
(1889-1951) and Ellen
Josephine Balcombe (1893-1957), who had married in 1912 in
Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
Norman senior was born in Tunbridge Wells and was the son of
George Robinson
(1864-?) and Helen Eliza
Francis. George gave his place as birth as Hastings,
Sussex in both the 1891 and 1901 census. George and Helen married in
1887 in the Tonbridge registration district. He was the son of
Frederick Robinson
and Ann Amelia Scott
and they married in Hastings, Sussex in 1851.
Frederick was born in Pulborough, Sussex and was the son of
William Robinson and
Charlotte Tugwell.
They had married in Pulborough in 1814. Charlotte was born in Warnham,
Sussex in 1793 and died in Pulborough in 1840. William was baptised in
West Chiltington, Sussex in 1788 and was the son of
James Robinson and
Elizabeth. William died aged 92 in 1881.
The 1841 census recorded
that James was 91 years old, therefore, he was born about 1750. He may
have been baptised in January 1752, the son of Richard Roberson
and Ann or in April 1752, the son of John Roberson
and Jane. Both baptisms took place in Billingshurst,
Sussex.
Whilst the spelling of Robinson is fairly consistent after about 1800,
before then there were various spellings, including Robenson, Roberson and
Robertson. Some of the variants maybe transcription errors owing to
difficult to read handwriting.
