William ROBERTS (1861-?)

and Elizabeth SHARP (1860-1945)

William Roberts and Elizabeth Sharp married in the third quarter of 1890 in the Bedford registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Roberts was baptised on 17 November 1861 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of John Roberts (1829-1905) and Elizabeth Ireland (1830-1913).  The baptism register noted that his father was a carpenter.  When the 1871 census was recorded he was a 9 year old scholar and living with his parents at Elm Grove, Station Road, Cowfold.  In 1881 he was a 19 year old bootmaker and living with his parents at 4 Elm Grove, Cowfold.

Elizabeth was most probably baptised as Betsy Sharp on 4 March 1860 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  She was the daughter of John Sharp (c1804-?) and Elizabeth/Betsy Howes (c1816-?).  She died aged 85 years and her death was registered as Elizabeth Roberts and Betsey Roberts in the second quarter of 1945 in the Wellingborough, Northamptonshire registration district.

At the time of the 1891 census the couple were living in Rushden, Northamptonshire.  William was a 29 year old cordwariner, born in Cowfold, Sussex and Elizabeth was 31 and born in Alconbury, Huntingdonshire.

The 1901 census recorded the couple and 3 children (Morris, Maria and Ronald) were living at 38 Grove Road, Rushden, Northamptonshire.  William was then a 38 year old boot ?, cordwainer and farmer and gave his place of birth as Redhill, Surrey.  Elizabeth was 40 years old and said she was born in Alconbury, Huntingdonshire.

By 1911, Elizabeth was a 51 year old widow and living at 95 High Street, South Rushden.  Also with her were her 3 children (Morris, Maude and Ronald), and unmarried 60 year old sister Caroline Sharpe who like Elizabeth was born in Alconbury.

William Roberts and Elizabeth Sharp had 3 known children:

  1. Morris John Roberts was born in the third quarter of 1891 in Rushden.  He was 9 years old in 1901.  In 1911 he was a 19 year old bootmaker on a slugging machine (think that's what it says!).

  2. Maud Elizabeth Roberts was born in the second quarter of 1893 in Rushden.  She was 7 years old in 1901 and her name was recorded as Maria.  In 1911 she was a 17 year old bootmaker/closer in a factory.

  3. Ronald William Roberts was born in the first quarter of 1895 in Rushden.  He was 6 years old in 1901.  In 1911 he was a 16 year old bootmaker on a finishing machine.

John Sharp and Elizabeth Howes married on 8 November 1840 in Alconbury cum Weston, Huntingdonshire.

John Sharp was born about 1804 in Alconbury, Huntingdonshire.

Elizabeth Howes was born about 1816 in Ripton, Huntingdonshire.

In 1861 the couple and 7 children (Ann, Joseph, William, Caroline, John, Betsy and Martha De ? Ann) were living in the High Street, Alconbury.  John was a 57 year old musician, born in Alconbury and Betsy was 45 and born in Ripton.

John Sharp and Elizabeth/Betsey had the following children:

  1. Ann Sharp was baptised on 27 March 1842 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  She was 19 years old in 1861.

  2. Joseph Sharp was baptised on 11 February 1844 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  He was a 17 year old agricultural labourer in 1861.

  3. Fanny Sharp was baptised on 7 December 1845 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.

  4. William Sharp was baptised on 3 October 1847 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  He was a 13 year old scholar in 1861.

  5. Caroline Sharp was baptised on 22 July 1849 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  She was an 11 year old scholar in 1861.

  6. John Sharp was baptised on 2 November 1851 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.

  7. John Sharp was baptised on 21 May 1854 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  He was a 4 year old scholar in 1861.  (Might 1854 John have died and another born in about 1857?)

  8. Betsy Sharp was baptised on 4 March 1860 in Alconbury-Weston, Huntingdonshire.  She was a year old in 1861.

  9. Martha De ? Ann Sharp was born in 1861 in Alconbury.  She was 4 months old when the 1861 census was recorded.
