John ROBERTS (c1765-1849)

and Ruth LELLIOTT (1780-1846)

 

John Roberts and Ruth Lelliott married by licence on 13 July 1796 in Ashurst, Sussex.  John was a bachelor and Ruth a spinster.  They were both of Ashurst and both made their X marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Dale and Ellis Sayers who both signed their names.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Ruth was the sister of one of my 4x Great Grandmothers and John was a possible nephew of a 6x Great Grandmother.) 

John Roberts was born about 1765.  He was most probably the son of John Roberts (1718-1776) and Mary Bignal (c1720-1790).  He died aged 84 years was buried in Cowfold on 9 December 1849.

Ruth Liliot was baptised on 11 June 1780 in Wiston, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Samuel Lillyott (1748-1817) and Elizabeth Sergeant (1748-?).  She died aged 67 years (as per the burial register) and was buried on 23 April 1846 in Cowfold.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple were living alone at the Old Workhouse in Cowfold.  John was then said to be a 78 year old labourer and Ruth was aged 70 years.  Their next door neighbours were the family of James Parsons.

 

John Roberts and Ruth Lelliott had 10 known children:

  1. John Roberts was baptised on 2 January 1797 in Cowfold and buried there on 11 June 1798.

  2. Henry Roberts was baptised on 22 April 1798 in Cowfold.

    As a bachelor Henry married Ann Parsons a widow on 31 April 1822 in Cowfold.

    Ann may have died aged 78 years and have been buried on 3 August 1872 in Cowfold.

    Henry and Ann had 1 known son:

    1. James Roberts was baptised on 9 February 1823 in Cowfold and buried there on 22 June 1823 aged 6 months.

    When the 1841 census was recorded Harry and Ann were living alone in Cowfold and he was a farm labourer.

  3. Peter Roberts was baptised on 8 December 1799 in Ashurst.  He died aged 90 years and was buried on 27 April 1889 in Cowfold..

    Peter married Harriet Lukhurst on 17 October 1824 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  They were both then of Nuthurst.

    Harriet Lukehurst was baptised on 30 November 1806 in Nuthurst and was the daughter of John Lukehurst and Ann Hussey.  She died aged 82 years and was buried on 18 May 1889 in Cowfold.

    Peter and Harriet had 8 known children.

    1. Ann Roberts was baptised on 4 September 1825 in Cowfold.

    2. Eliza Roberts was baptised on 16 March 1828 in Cowfold.

    3. Ellen Roberts was baptised on 28 July 1833 in West Grinstead.

    4. Susanna Roberts was baptised on 1 November 1835 in Cowfold.

    5. George Roberts was baptised on 27 May 1838 in Cowfold and buried there on 3 March 1839 aged 10 months.

    6. Peter Roberts was baptised on 15 March 1840 in Cowfold.  He died aged 49 years in 1889 (fourth quarter).

      Peter married Emily Newnham in the third quarter of 1868 in the Horsham registration district.

      Emily was baptised on 1 September 1844 in West Grinstead and was the daughter of Charles Newnham and Mary Potter.

      When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living in Gateland Cottage, Cowfold and Peter as an agricultural labourer.  Also with them then was Charles Newham a boarder aged 80 and John Dart a lodger aged 26.

      Peter and Emily had 4 known children:

      1. Mary Roberts was born about 1869 in West Grinstead.

      2. George Peter Roberts was baptised on 28 August 1870 in West Grinstead.

      3. William Roberts was born about 1875 in West Grinstead.

      4. Ellen Roberts was born about 1879 in West Grinstead.

    7. Mary Anne Roberts was baptised on 20 September 1845 in Lower Beeding.

    8. William Roberts was baptised on 25 June 1848 in Lower Beeding.

    In 1861 the couple and their youngest son were living at North Fields, Cowfold along with Lodger 20 year old Samuel Sayers.  Peter was then an Agricultural Labourer.

    When the 1881 census was recorded 82 year old Peter and wife 74 year old Harriet, were living in Gratfield Cottage, Cowfold and he was a Farm Labourer.  They also had a lodger, 19 year old David Fair who was also a Farm Labourer.

  4. William Roberts was born on 30 January and baptised on 1 March 1801 in Ashurst.  He married Charity Mansbridge in 1821.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Thomas Roberts was baptised on 2 January 1803 in Ashurst.  He died aged 75 years and was  buried on 2 February 1878 in Cowfold.

    Thomas married Sarah Kinsett by licence on 22 October 1830 in Nuthurst.  Their marriage licence was dated 23 (yes 23) October 1830 in the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  He was said to be of Cowfold, whilst she was a spinster and minor of Nuthurst, and married with the consent of Jane Miles.  (A Jane Kinsett married James Miles on 4 May 1825 in West Grinstead.)

    When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Gervais in Cowfold and Thomas was a farm labourer.

    Sarah died aged 35 years and was buried on 14 April 1847 in Cowfold.

    Thomas and Sarah had 8 known children:

    1. Elizabeth Roberts was baptised on 22 May 1831 in Cowfold.  She was 10 years old when the 1841 census was recorded and living at home.

    2. James Roberts was baptised on 10 November 1833 in Cowfold.  In 1841 he was a 7 year living with his parents.  He was a 17 year old agricultural labourer in 1851.

    3. Philip Roberts was baptised on 15 March 1835 in Cowfold and buried there on 2 June 1835 aged 4 months.

    4. Rebecca Roberts was baptised on 8 May 1836 in Cowfold.  She was 5 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was a 14 year old house servant living at Noah's Ark, Cowfold, in the home of Ludewig Arnaman a retired customs officer.

      Rebecca married James Mansbridge on 26 May 1855 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor, minor and labourer and she was a spinster and minor.  Their fathers were named as William Mansbridge and Thomas Roberts who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Allen Tirrell and Henry Hill.

      James was baptised on 3 October 1837 in Shermanbury, Sussex and was the son of William Mansbridge and Sarah Neeve.

    5. Fanny Roberts was baptised on 23 September 1838 in Cowfold.  In 1841 she was 3 years old.  She was a 12 year old scholar in 1851.  She may have died aged 34 years and have been buried on 1 October 1872 in Cowfold.

    6. Sarah Roberts was baptised on 29 August 1841 in Cowfold.  She was a 10 year old scholar in 1851.  She may have died aged 22 years and have been buried on 7 April 1864 in Cowfold.

    7. Jane Roberts was baptised on 15 January 1842 in Cowfold.  She was an 8 year old scholar in 1851.

    8. Mary Ann Roberts was baptised on 11 April 1847 in Cowfold and possibly again there on 25 September 1847.  She died aged 13 months and was buried on 18 May 1848 in Cowfold.

    When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living next door to Thomas's brother James and his family in the Old Workhouse, Cowfold and Thomas was then an agricultural labourer.

  6. Mary Roberts was baptised on 22 April 1806 in Ashurst.  She may have died aged 53 years and have been buried on 2 January 1856 in West Grinstead.

    Mary married Thomas Fairs on 14 January 1824 in West Grinstead.  At the time they were both of West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ann Richardson and Edward Freeman.  (Another Thomas Fairs married Mary Jupp in 1822.)

    Thomas was baptised on 20 April 1800 in West Grinstead and was the son of Thomas Fairs and Elizabeth Lindfield.  He died aged 58 years in Horsham and was buried on 5 December 1858 in West Grinstead.

    At the time of the 1841 census the couple and 4 children were living at B??tons in Shipley and Thomas was an agricultural labourer.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in Bar Lane, West Grinstead.  Thomas was then a 51 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was said to be 47 and born in Ashurst.  With them on census night was 20 year old lodger, Peter Potter.

    Thomas and Mary had the following children:

    1. Mary Fairs was baptised on 2 December 1827 in West Grinstead.  She was 13 years old in 1841.  She may have married George Cutress on 20 July 1850 in Henfield, but another Mary Fairs was baptised in West Grinstead on 17 December 1826, the daughter of John Fairs and Eliza.  The 1851 census records Mary Cutress, wife of George, was 24 years old and born in West Grinstead - need to check the marriage register for the name of Mary's father.

    2. Sarah Fairs was baptised on 1 May 1829 in West Grinstead.  She was 12 years old in 1841.  Sarah married David Mitchell on 3 June 1847 in West Grinstead.  He was then a 20 year old bachelor and labourer and she an 18 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as James Mitchell and Thomas Fairs who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Frances Jupp and Henry Mitchell.

    3. Reubens Fairs was baptised on 11 March 1832 in West Grinstead.  He was a 9 year old agricultural labourer when the 1841 census was recorded  In 1851 he was a 19 year old servant and agricultural labourer in the home of 70 year old Thomas Fairs and his 68 year old wife Mary at New House in West Grinstead.

    4. Rebecca Fairs was baptised on 28 July 1833 in West Grinstead.  In 1841 she was 7 years old.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was a 17 year old house servant in the home of Thomas Nailard at Needs Farm in West Grinstead.  Rebecca married Henry Millham by banns on 14 October 1854 in West Grinstead.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Thomas John Millham and John Fairs who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Ruben Fairs and Fanny Greenfield.

  7. George Roberts was baptised on 30 July 1809 in Ashurst.  He died aged 78 years on 28 April 1888 in Cowfold (ref.1) and was buried there on 3 May 1888.  His cause of death was natural decay.

    George married Jane Peacock on 20 January 1843 in Albourne, Sussex.

    Jane was baptised on 6 February 1820 in Albourne, Sussex and was the daughter of John Peacock and Catherine.  Jane died aged 64 years on 3 May 1883 in Cowfold (ref.1) and was buried there on 6 May 1883.

    George and Jane had 8 known children:

    1. Ruth Roberts was baptised on 28 May 1843 in Cowfold.  She was a 7 year old scholar in 1851.

    2. Ellen Roberts was born on 16 June 1845 in Cowfold (ref.1) and baptised there on 27 July 1845.  She died in 1929 (ref.1).  In 1851 she was a scholar at home.  In 1861 she was a maid servant in the home of William Newman at Capons Farm in Cowfold.  The 1871 census records that she was an unmarried 27 year old servant and cook living in the home of Thomas Hogkinson a retired chaplain in the Royal Navy at Shair?field in Havant, Hampshire.

      Ellen married George Merritt on 13 August 1877 in the parish church of New Alresford, Hampshire (ref.1)

      George was a butcher (ref.1).  He died on 1 June 1917 from a brain injury sustained through falling from a cart (ref.1).

      George and Ellen had 4 children (ref.1):

      1. Arthur Merritt was born in 1879 (ref.1).

      2. Agnes Merritt was born in 1882 (ref.1).

      3. Albert Merritt was born in 1885 (ref.1).

      4. Alfred Merritt was born in 1887 and died in 1960 (ref.1).  He was the only one of his siblings to marry (ref.1).  He married Lillie Riley in 1918 after moving from New Alresford to the Midlands (ref.1).  They had 3 children (ref.1):

        1. Amy Merritt (ref.1).

        2. Constance Merritt (1921-1952) (ref.1).

        3. George Merritt (ref.1).

    3. Henry Roberts was baptised on 25 March 1849 in Cowfold.  He was living with his parents in 1851.  He may have married Elizabeth Ann Wallace in 1870.  Elizabeth Ann Roberts died aged 28 years and was buried on 11 April 1877 in Cowfold.

    4. Catharine Roberts was baptised on 23 May 1852 in Cowfold.

    5. Albert Roberts was baptised on 18 March 1855 in Cowfold.  However, in the 1861 census his name would seem to have been recorded as 6 year old Alfred Roberts.  And as Alfred, he may have married Betsy Packham in 1881.

      Betsy was baptised on 9 June 1850 in Bolney, Sussex and was the daughter of William Packham and Mary Stoner.

    6. Susan Roberts was baptised on 1 November 1857 in Cowfold.

      Susan married James Worsfold on 1 May 1875 in Cowfold.

      James was born about 1853 in Cowfold and was the son of William Worsfold and Jane Neale.

      James and Susan had 11 known children.

    7. Mary Jane Roberts was baptised on 1 January 1860 in Cowfold and buried there on 24 May 1860.  (A transcript of the Cowfold burial register records that she was 6 years old, but might this have been 6 months?)

    8. Frances Roberts was baptised on 5 July 1863 in Cowfold and buried there on 14 May 1866 aged 3 years.

    When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living at Pound House, Cowfold and George was an agricultural labourer.  By 1861 the family were living in Ash Hurst, Cowfold and George was still an agricultural labourer.  In 1881 the couple were living at Ashurst Cottage in Cowfold and George was a carter and agricultural labourer.  With them was their son Harry Roberts aged 32 and 9 year old grandson, Henry Roberts.

  8. Sarah Roberts was baptised on 6 July 1811 in Ashurst.

    Sarah may have married William Fowler on 2 January 1830 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and they were both of Cowfold.

    They had 1 known daughter:

    1. Elizabeth Fowler was baptised on 30 May 1830 in Cowfold and buried there on 23 June 1830.

  9. James Roberts was baptised on 13 March 1813 in Ashurst.  He died aged 53 years and was buried on 13 August 1867 in Cowfold.

    James married Ann Woolven on 3 September 1837 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.

    Ann was said to have been born in about 1812 in Cowfold, as per the 1851 census, but her baptism does not seem to have been recorded in the Cowfold register.  She may have died aged 73 years and have been buried on 1 June 1885 in Cowfold.

    The couple had 8 known children:

    1. Sophia Roberts was baptised on 12 March 1837 in Cowfold.  She was not with her parents and siblings when the 1851 census was recorded.

    2. Anne Roberts was baptised on 2 June 1839 in Cowfold.  Ann was an 11 year old scholar when the 1851 census was recorded.

      Ann married William Bennett Briggs on 9 September 1860 in Brighton.

    3. Elizabeth Roberts was baptised on 31 October 1841 in Cowfold.  She was a 9 year old scholar when the 1851 census was recorded.

    4. Robert Roberts was baptised on 29 December 1844 in Cowfold.  He was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was a carter living at Mock Ford in Cowfold in the home of James Pierce.

    5. James Roberts was baptised on 28 February 1847 in Cowfold and buried there on 30 April 1848 aged 15 months.

    6. John Roberts was baptised on 27 May 1849 in Cowfold.  He was a scholar in 1861.

    7. Emily Roberts was born about 1852 in Cowfold.  She was a scholar in 1861.

    8. Rosa Roberts was baptised on 20 May 1855 in Cowfold.

    In 1851 the family were living next door to James's brother Thomas and his family in the Old Workhouse, Cowfold.  James was then an agricultural labourer.  Also with the family then was 17 year old son George Roberts who had been born in Cowfold.  He was most probably Ann's illegitimate son, George Woolven who was baptised in Cowfold on 16 March 1834. 

    When the 1861 census was recorded the couple together with their 3 youngest children were living in Patches Cottage in Cowfold and James was an agricultural labourer.

  10. John Roberts was baptised on 31 July 1816 in Ashurst.
