John ROBERTS (c1678-1739)

and Sarah BENNET (c1685-1720)

John Roberts and Sarah Bennet were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 15 May 1705 in Nuthurst, Sussex.

John Roberts was born between 1678-80.  He was the eldest son of 5 216 John Roberts (c1622-1706) and 5 216 Mary Lindfield (c1645-1727).  John was a Gentleman of Cowfold.  He was a Churchwarden of Cowfold in 1711 and 1732 and an Overseer in 1716 and 1737.  In 1733 he held Denwood, Welches and Hookland.  John was buried on 13 March 1738/9 in Cowfold.  His will was dated 30 January 1712 and proved on 3 January 1739/40.

Sarah Bennet’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 5 December 1720 in Cowfold.  She may have been baptised on 15 December 1681 as the daughter of Henry Bennet and Dorothy Martin, OR on 23 June 1685 as the daughter of William Bennet and Joan Greenfield, both baptisms took place in Horsham.

John Roberts and Sarah Bennet had 5 known children:

1. Catherine Roberts was baptised on 12 April 1706 in Cowfold.  She was named in her father’s will.

2. Sarah Roberts, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 25 May 1708 in Cowfold.  She married Nicholas West in 1729.  (They have their own page.)

3. John Roberts was baptised on 27 December 1710 in Cowfold and buried there on 13 October 1715.

4. Mary Roberts was baptised on 3 March 1715/6 in Cowfold.

5. John Roberts was baptised on 24 January 1717/8 in Cowfold.  (He has his own page.)
