to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 12 February 1677/8 in
Shermanbury, Sussex. Their marriage occurs 3 times in the Sussex
Family History Group's marriage index. Firstly, as a Marriage Licence
issued in the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 12 February in which her name was
recorded as Mary Swane. Next, her name was recorded as Mary
Linfeild and then as Mary Swaine. In all three entries John
and Mary were said to be of Cowfold. I have yet to view the original
entry to see for myself what has been entered into the Shermanbury register.
I am told that Mary was mentioned in her father Lindfield's Will, so I
wonder if she was a widow when she married John? But on searching the
SFHG's marriage index, I could not find a previous marriage of Mary
Lindfield to a Mr. Swa(i)ne.
John Roberts may have been born about 1622. He was the eldest
son of John Roberts
(1594-1658) and Ann. He did have an elder brother named John
born in 1620, but he died as an infant. John was buried in Cowfold on
5 October 1706. He was an Executor of his father's 1658 Will and
Trustee to William Gratwicke of Jervis in 1670. He was a Church
warden of Cowfold in 1661 and 1705. He was also a Way warden in 1665,
1684 and 1703. He held Homeland as son and heir to his father at the
Shermanbury Manor Court of 30 August 1659, but refused to joint the homage.
Alienated Wilcocks in Cowfold at the Court of 5 September 1698. He was
liable for Church Panels in 1682 for Denwood, Welches, Woodland, Frapshaw,
Hookland, Goodyers, Woodhouse and Smithland.
Mary Linfield's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

Beard who had married in 1641. Mary
was buried on 23 August 1727 in Nuthurst, Sussex. She made a Will in 1722 in
which she mentioned her son John.
