John ROBERTS (1570-1630)

and Anne GRATWICK (1575-?)

John Roberts and Anne Gratwick were my 10x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 18 September 1593 in Coombes, Sussex.

John Roberts was baptised on 3 January 1570/1 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Roberts (c1535-1593) and Joanna Ockenden (c1540-1600).  He was buried on 29 June 1630 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  His will was dated 1 March 1630 and proved on 10 November 1632, at which time he was a yeoman of Shermanbury.  John was an overseer to the 1591 will of Richard West of Billingshurst, to his father in 1593 and to his brother Henry Roberts in 1617.

Anne Gratwick was baptised on 4 December 1575 in Cowfold.  Unfortunately her parent's names were not recorded in the baptism register.  She was mentioned in her husband's will.

John Roberts and Anne Gratwick had 5 known children:

  1. John Robert, my 9x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 20 June 1594 in Cowfold.  He married Ann.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Thomas Roberts was baptised on 27 February 1595/6 in Coombes.  But his baptism was recorded in the Cowfold register which stated that he was born in Horsham, Sussex.  He probably died as an infant.

  3. Ann Roberts was baptised on 17 August 1600 in Cowfold.

Ann married John Backshell of Beeding and Hurstpierpoint on 13 August 1616 in Cowfold.

John was the son of John Backshell (?-1624) and Dorothy West.  He was buried in Upper Beeding on 18 February 1635/6.  John was an overseer to the 1630 will of John Roberts and the 1634 will of Thomas Roberts.

John and Ann had 3 known children:

    1. John Backshell was 15 years and 7 months old when his father died.  He was named as an overseer of his Uncles wills, namely Ockenden Roberts of 1651 and John Roberts of 1655.  John married Jane or Joan Parsons on 18 June 1643 in Steyning, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Parson a yeoman of Steyning.  John and Jane/Joan had 3 known children:

      1. John Backshell was a gent of Beeding.  He was executor to the 1670 will of John Marchant.

John married Mary Peckham on 18 May 1683 in Lewes.  She was the daughter of Sir Henry Peckham and Judith Goring.

      2. Anne Backshell was named in the 1670 will of John Marchant of Beeding.

      3. Jane Backshell was named in the 1670 will of John Marchant of Beeding.

    2. Anne Backshell was named in her grandfather's will of 1624 and that of her father in 1635.  Anne may have married John Frere of Rottingdean, Sussex on 17 December 1639 in Lewes.

    3. Dorothy Backshell was named in her grandfather's and father's wills.

  4. Ockenden Roberts was baptised on 3 July 1606 in Cowfold.  He was called "second son" in his father's will.  Ockenden's will was dated 28 July 1651 and proved on 4 May 1653, at which time he was a yeoman of Shermanbury.

Ockenden may have married twice.  Firstly to Lea Vagger by licence 23 October 1626 in Shermanbury.  Their licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and was dated 20 October 1626.  It recorded that Ockenden was a yeoman of Shermanbury and Lea a spinster of West Grinstead.  Surety was given by John Roberts a yeoman of Shermanbury.

Ockenden and Lea had 3 known children:

    1. John Roberts was baptised on 19 September 1628 in Shermanbury and probably died young.

    2. Ann Roberts may have been born about 1630.  She was named in her father's 1651 will.

    3. Lea Roberts may have been born about 1632.  She was named in her father's 1651 will.  She married Mr. Cripps, but no possible marriage has been found in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index nor the IGI.

Ockenden may then have married Amy Chatfield a widow of Lewes by licence dated 29 June 1642.  He was then described as a Gent of Shermanbury.  Surety was given by Richard Snat a Gent of Lewes.  She was mentioned in Ockenden's will.

  5. Thomas Roberts was called "youngest son" in his father's 1630 Will, and "younger son" in his Uncle Henry's 1617 will.  His own will was dated 20 December 1634 and proved at Lewes on 22 January 1634/5.  He named the Overseers of his will as John Gratwicke of Aplesham and John Backshell of Beeding.

Thomas married Jane Bartley of Shermanbury by licence on 8 June 1627 at Lewes.  She was mentioned in her husband's will.

Thomas and Jane had 2 known children:

    1. Thomas Roberts was named in his father's will and in that of his Uncle Ockenden's will of 1651, at which point Thomas was under 21.

    2. Ann Roberts was also mentioned in her father and Uncle Ockenden's wills.  She was also under 21 in 1651.

As Jane Robertes, widow, she remarried by licence on 16 November 1635 in Woodmancote, Sussex to Henry Boniface  a yeoman of Shermanbury.  Their licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 11 November 1635.  Surety was provided by Henry and Thomas Boniface a yeoman of Woodmancote.
