James RICHARDSON
(1783-1855)
and Ann WOOLVIN (1789-1880)

James Richardson and Ann Woolven married by banns on 19 April 1808
in Cowfold, Sussex. The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas
Steele and Sarah Richardson. (They were not my direct
ancestors.)
James Richardson was baptised on 21 December 1783 in Shermanbury,
Sussex. He was the son
of Henry Richardson (1754-1836) and
Elizabeth
Field (c1757-1843). He died aged 74 years and was buried
on 29 March 1855 in Cowfold. His paternal grandparents were
Henry Richardson and Ann Lindfield.
Ann Woolvin was baptised on 14 June 1789 in Cowfold and the baptism
register noted that her parents were paupers. She was the daughter
of John Woolven
(c1752-1815) and
Sarah Lelliot (1755-1823). She died aged 91 years
and was buried on 30 June 1880 in Cowfold.
In 1841 the couple were living at Hill Farm Cottage in Cowfold. He was
a 55 year old farm labourer and she was 50. Also with the couple were
13 year of William Richardson, 14 year old shoemaker
William Richardson and 42 year old Richard Woolven.
At the time of the 1851 census James was 69 years old and formerly a
gardener. Ann was then 63 years old. The couple were living
at Little Cotlands, Horsham Road, Cowfold, along with their son William
and his wife, 2 grandsons and Ann's brother Richard.
James Richardson and Ann Woolvin had

Elizabeth Richardson was baptised on 22 July 1810
in Cowfold. She died aged 13 years and was buried on 31 July
1823 in Cowfold.

Ann Richardson was baptised on 28 June 1812 in
Cowfold.

Henry Richardson was
baptised on 4 June 1814 in Cowfold, at which time his father was a
labourer. Henry married
Ann Roberts
in 1838. (They have their own page.)

James Richardson was baptised on 2 February or
March 1817 in Cowfold.

Mary Richardson was baptised on 31 December 1820 in
Cowfold. She married
Henry Linfield
in 1840. (They have their own page.)

Richard Richardson was baptised on 1 June 1823 in
Cowfold.
Richard married
Mary Manvell by banns on 8 April
1845 in Cowfold. Richard was a bachelor and a shepherd.
Mary was a spinster and a minor. Their fathers were named as
James Richardson a gardener and James
Manvell a bricklayer. The witnesses to their marriage
were William Longhurst and Sarah Longhurst.
Mary may have died aged 22 years and have been buried on 25 March
1847 in Cowfold.
Richard and Mary had the following child:

James Richardson was baptised on 25 January
1846 in Cowfold. He died aged 44 years and was buried on 9
February 1890 in Cowfold. He was 5 years old in 1851 and
living with his grandparents.

William Richardson was baptised on 24 September
1826 in Cowfold. He was most probably 13 years old in 1841 and
living with his parents in Cowfold.
William married Jane Hamshar
by banns on 1 December 1849 in Cowfold. William was a bachelor
and labourer, whilst Jane was a spisnter. Their fathers were
named as James Richardson and William
Hamshar who were both labourers. The witnesses to
their marriage were Richard Richardson and Henry Hill.
Jane was baptised on 20 August 1826 in Rudgwick,
Sussex and was the daughter
of William Hampshire and Amelia.
They had the following children:

William Emerson Richardson was
baptised on 12 May 1850 in Cowfold. He was 11 months old
in 1851.

Betsey Richardson was baptised on 16 July 1854 in
Lower Beeding.

Alexander Richardson was baptised on 30 January
1857 in Lower Beeding.

Matilda Richardson was baptised on 6 June 1858 in
Lower Beeding. Matilda married Richard Monnery
on 3 March 1877 in Lower Beeding.

James Thomas Richardson was baptised on 17 November
1861 in Lower Beeding.

Mary Ann Richardson was baptised on 27 May 1866 in
Lower Beeding.

Henry Ernest Richardson was baptised on 24 October
1869 in Lower Beeding.
