Henry RICHARDSON (1851-?)

and Theresa KNIGHT  (c1852-?)

Henry Richardson and Teresa Knight married by banns on 1 August 1875 in Horsham, Sussex.  He was then a 24 year old bachelor and porter from Hampstead.  She was a 23 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Henry Richardson and John Knight.  The witnesses to their marriage were Walter Wheeler and Emma Cox.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Richardson was baptised on 11 May 1851 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of Henry Richardson (1814-1869) and Ann Roberts (1817-1891).  At the time of the 1851 census, Henry was under a month old and he was living with his parents and elder siblings at Potters in Cowfold.  His father was then an agricultural labourer and his mother a schoolmistress.  In 1861 he was a 10 year old scholar and living at Potters House, Cowfold with his parents and siblings.

Theresa was baptised as Thirza Knight on 9 January 1853 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Knight (1805-?) and Elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Mitchell).  The 1861 census records that she was an 8 year old scholar living with her father and siblings at Furzefield in Shermanbury.  Her name was then recorded as Turza Knight.

In 1881 the couple and their young son were living at Little Collards in Cowfold, the home of Henry's 63 year old widowed mother Ann.  When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 4 sons were living at Picts Cottage in Cowfold, next door to Mark Mansbridge and his family.  Henry was then a 40 year old general labourer and Theresa was 38 years old.

Henry Richardson and Theresa Knight had 6 known children:

1. Thomas Harry Richardson was born on 3 June 1876 and baptised on 25 February 1877 in Cowfold, at which time his parents were from Picts Cottage.  He died aged 1 years and was buried on 9 May 1877 in Cowfold.  The burial register recorded his name as Thomas Henry Richardson Knight.

2. Alfred Richardson was born on 13 December 1877 and baptised on 27 January 1878 in Cowfold, at which time his parents were of Picts Farm.  He was 3 years old at the time of 1881 census.  In 1891 he was a 13 year old agricultural labourer.

3. George Richardson was born on 25 June 1883 and baptised on 26 August 1883 in Cowfold, at which time his parents were of Picts.  He was a 7 year old scholar in 1891.

4. Owen Richardson was born on 27 September 1885 and baptised on 30 May 1886 in Cowfold, at which time his parents were from Picts.  He was 5 years old in 1891.

5. Arthur William Richardson was born on 12 January 1889 and baptised on 24 February 1889 in Cowfold, at which time his parents were from Picts.  In 1891 he was 2 years old.

6. Ann Elizabeth Richardson was born on 15 July 1891 and baptised on 27 September 1891 in Cowfold, at which time her parents were from Picts.
