Henry RICHARDSON (1814-1869)

and Ann ROBERTS (1817-1891)

Henry Richardson and Ann Roberts married on 12 May 1838 at St. Nicholas in Brighton, Sussex.  Their fathers were named as James Richardson and John Roberts.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Richardson was baptised on 4 June 1814 in Cowfold, Sussex.  He was the son of James Richardson (1783-1855) and Ann Woolvin (1789-1880).  His father was a labourer.  Henry died aged 54 years on 28 July 1869 and was buried on 1 August 1869 in Cowfold.

Ann Roberts was baptised on 14 December 1817 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Roberts and Mary (possibly Mary Broughton).  She died aged 73 years 9 July 1891 and was buried on 12 July 1891 in Cowfold in the same grave as her husband.  Their headstone still survives in the Cowfold churchyard.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living at Potters in Cowfold, along with their 6 children and 22 year old unmarried visitor, Rebecca Stoner.  Henry was a 36 year old agricultural labourer and Ann was a 33 year old schoolmistess.  (Rebecca Stoner was baptised on 18 January 1829 in Cowfold and was the daughter of John Stoner (c1798-?) and Sarah King (c1798-?).)

In 1861 the couple and 5 children were living at Potters House, Cowfold.  Henry was a 46 year old agricultural labourer and Ann was a 43 year old schoolmistress.  He gave his place of birth as Cowfold and she as Beeding.  Their next door neighbours at Potters House were the family of George Hills.

Henry Richardson and Ann Roberts had 7 known children:

  1. James Richardson was baptised on 26 May 1839 in Cowfold, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.

  2. Elizabeth Richardson was baptised on 30 May 1841 in Cowfold.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.

  3. Fanny Richardson was baptised on 7 May 1843 in Cowfold.  She was a 7 year old scholar in 1851.

  4. Michael Richardson was baptised on 27 April 1845 in Cowfold.   He was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 16 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.

Michael married Mercy King on 29 September 1873 in Fletching, Sussex.  They were both then aged 28 years.  Their fathers were named as Henry Richardson and Thomas King.

  5. Ann Richardson was baptised on 26 September 1847 in Cowfold.  She was 3 years old in 1851.  In 1861 she was a 13 year old scholar.

  6. Henry Richardson was baptised on 11 May 1851 in Cowfold.  He was under a month old when the 1851 census was recorded.  In 1861 he was a 10 year old scholar.  He married Theresa Knight in 1875.  (They have their own page.)

  7. William Richardson was baptised on 12 August 1855 in Cowfold.  He was a 5 year old scholar in 1861.
