Henry RICHARDSON (1776-?)

and Mary EVERDEN (c1788-?)

Henry Richardson and Mary Everden married on 23 November 1812 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Henry Richardson was baptised on 16 June 1776 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of Francis Richardson (1750-1818) and Susanna King.  He died between 1851 and 1861.

Mary Everden was born about 1788 in Cuckfield.  Might she have been the daughter of James Evenden and Sarah Foster who married on 21 April 1776 in Ditchling, Sussex?  She died between 1861 and 1871.

The 1841 census recorded that a 65 year old Henry Richardson was living at the Wheat Sheaf in Lower Beeding along with 45 year old Mary, 13 year old William and 10 year old James.

In 1851 the couple were living in Warninglid Lane, Slaugham.  Henry was 75 years old and gave his place of birth as Bolney.  Mary was 63 year old and born in Cuckfield.

The 1861 census records Mary was a 70 year old widow and living with her son John in Slaugham.  They were living next door to the family of her daughter-in-law Eliza Venn, who had previously married Mary's son William.

Henry Richardson and Mary Everden had 8 known children:

  1. Mary Ann Richardson was baptised on 4 July 1813 in Slaugham.

  2. Frances Richardson was baptised on 17 March 1816 in Bolney.  The baptism register noted that her father was a farmer from Cuckfield.

Frances married James Scrase on 26 May 1835 in Wivelsfield.

James and Frances had the following child:

    1. Edward Scrace was born about 1843 and baptised on 25 March 1849 in Slaugham.  In 1851 he was 8 years old and living with his Uncle Francis Richardson.

  3. Henry Richardson was baptised on 15 February 1818 in Bolney.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

  4. Francis Richardson was baptised on 28 March 1823 in Slaugham.

    Francis married Mary Ann.

Mary Ann was born about 1824 in Essex.

In 1851 the couple were living at 1 Rochester Place, Islington, Middlesex.  He was a 28 year old gardener and she was 27.  Also with them was their 8 year old nephew Edward Scrase who had been born in Slaugham and 20 year old visitor James Webster who was an agricultural labourer from Essex.

  5. Matilda Richardson was baptised on 29 January 1826 in Slaugham.  In 1841 she was a 16 year old servant in the home of Ann Scrase in Slaugham.

Matilda married John Tomsett on 22 June 1844 in Slaugham.

  6. John M. Richardson was born about 1827 in Cuckfield.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 34 year old wood dealer and living in Slaugham, where he was the head of his household.  His mother and 53 year old visitor and news reporter, Geeorge Webber, were also with him.

  7. William Richardson was baptised on 11 October 1829 in Chailey, Sussex.  The baptism register noted that his father was a farmer.  William married Eliza Hills in 1850.  (They have their own page.)

  8. James Richardson was born about 1831.
