John RESTALL (1779-1852)

and Sophia CAMPBELL (c1783-1834)

John Restall and Sophia Campbell married on 20 August 1810 at Saint Mary's in Portsea, Hampshire.  John may have previously had a relationship with Elizabeth Aylwin (1785-1865) and they may have been my 4x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see John and Elizabeth's possible place in my pedigree chart.)

John Restall was baptised on 4 November 1779 in Trotton, Sussex.  He was the son of John Restall (1759-1816) and Jane Jermain (?-1780).  At the time of his baptism his father was described a John Restall, junior and he was a farmer.  John died aged 73 years and was buried on 11 December 1852 in Trotton.  The burial register noted that he was from Rake.

Sophia Campbell's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  As Sophia Restall she died aged 51 years and was buried on 24 June 1834 in Trotton.

John Restall may have been the father of an illegitimate son:

  1. John Restall Aylwin was baptised on 22 March 1807 in Treyford cum Didling.  He married Sarah Baxter in 1833.  (They have their own page.)

John Restall and Sophia Campbell had 5 known children:

  1. John Restall was born on 24 May 1812 and baptised on 22 June 1812 in Trotton.  He married Sarah Patient in 1841.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Robert Restall was baptised on 23 October 1814 in Trotton.

Robert married Charlotte Porter by banns on 4 February 1845 in Rogate.  He was then a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as John Restall and William Porter who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Porter and Ann Porter.

Robert and Charlotte had the following children:

Before her marriage she had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Fanny Georgina Restall was baptised on 21 March 1841 in Trotton.  The baptism register noted that her mother was a single woman from Rogate.  When the 1841 census was recorded she was 4 month old Georgina Restall and she was living with her mother and maternal grandfather.  The 1851 census records that she was 10 year old Georginia R. Chapman and her place of birth was given as Rogate.

Jane married George Chapman de Louth on 31 July 1842 (ref.1).

George Chapman de Louth died aged 42 years and was buried on 29 October 1857 in Rogate.
